Re: Honeybee Christmas Cards for yard owners

Bill, this is one I designed last year. I sell this off a site where I have a small shop called Zazzle. It can be customized before print. Or if you like I can customize for you as needed.
    Yes it...

Re: Less than Optimal Combining of Colonies

I inspected my Nuc, the suspected LW hive. I found a small patch of sealed brood which was not Drone brood. Saw some larvae 3 to 6 days old. Maybe 3 x 4 inch area, one side of one frame. I did not...

Re: Less than Optimal Combining of Colonies

I am going to watch this post as I came here with a similar situation and was looking for answers.
I have a 5 frame Nuc, suspected laying worker (will go out and verify after typing this). Queenless...

    Re: August swarms?

ooops! Sorry for the multiple posts. Tried and cannot find how to delete them. The "Edit Post" link does not work with my browser.
  6. Re: MANY, MANY Swarms this year. Would you agree?

Me again. Another update. Just finished capturing another swarm, that makes 6 for us so far. Heard of at least 6 or 7 more at the club meeting last month. In my opinion there seems to be a lot more...

Re: Combing a swarm...is it feasible?

I can't comment to the TBH situation, bit I just did a newspaper combine with 2 queenless splits and a swarm that had a queen that I had in a 10 frame. I had two queenless splits, one VERY small and...

    Re: Can swarms combine?

Yes the sheet thing does seem to help, we're keeping it handy. Just have to re-make the bed at night. :)
Funny you should mention about multiple queens in a swarm as we just researched that. I was...

    Re: Can swarms combine?

Hello JW. I know of Clinton Iowa. Black Locust bloom has been on for about 9 or 10 days now. Pretty heavy. Blooms still on despite 5 days in a row of rain and cold. The weather cleared for 2.5 days,...
  10. Re: Cold front coming through tonight? Reduce entrances again?

    Thanks! Makes sense.
  11. Re: Cold front coming through tonight? Reduce entrances again?

OK so I'm a little confused with the talk of closing down front entrances with a bit of cold air coming in. I've got my hives opened up and have had for several weeks since we warmed up into 60's and...

    Re: Can swarms combine?

Yea, I guess you just never know. We got these bees all settled in, went back to the house and then another one of our hives swarmed! This time they settled about 40' up in another tree. Larger than...

    Re: Can swarms combine?

OK, so I'm using a 16' pole with a bucket and rope pull lid on it, standing in the back of my pickup truck to reach the swarm. We suspect the swarm is from two hives, combined on this branch 24' up...

    Re: Can swarms combine?

Thanks Oldtimer and Michael Bush. Well we have a plan (?). Got a bucket with a pull lid on it on a pole that can reach. So we're going to try and capture this swarm. If indeed it is two swarms (it is...

Can swarms combine? WoW! What a capture.

Did splits 16 days ago on 4 of our hives. Doing follow up checking on things in 2 donor hives, finished one, on second hive when all of a sudden here they come! The first hive they came flying out,...
  16. Re: MANY, MANY Swarms this year. Would you agree?

I already posted on this thread earlier. Two more since then. One of those from another of our hives that we split 2 weeks ago. Took a 5 frame Nuc and 5 more frames into a 10 frame box on splits....

Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

West Central IL - 5-17 1:00 p.m. partly sunny, day after big storms. Large 8 LB swarm 25' up in a tree. Can't get to them safely, so will let nature take it's course. Attempting to bait them down....

Re: Did I just lose my queen?

Really hard to tell from what you are saying to know if she's gone or not. I've only got a couple years keeping but if it were me, I'd leave the hive closed for a four or five days. Meaning letting...
  19. Re: MANY, MANY Swarms this year. Would you agree?

West Central Illinois. We've heard of 6 or 7. One of ours swarmed after we split. We got them housed. The swarms seemed a bit earlier this year than last. We're just third year keepers here.

Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

5-13, Good sized swarm from one of our hives that we just split 11 days ago. 20' up in a Cedar tree. Got them down and hived, we'll see if they stay.

Re: Just witnessed something really cool

The odds have got to be low for that one. Pretty cool though.
I remember once we brought a "gift" hive home that had a newly emerged queen in it. We set it up in the Apriary, and I stood there...

    Re: orientation flights

The first times you see orientation it is a bit freaky. Now my bees do their flights between 2:00 and 2:45 p.m. I could almost set my watch to that. Lasts from 5 to 10 minutes usually.
