  1. Re: To re-queen in the fall or not to re-queen…that is the question.

I do it but not the way that your referring to. I tend to split my hives after the summer solstice up until the first of Aug. I let them raise their own queens.
Most of the time I'll pull the queen...

Re: Too Late to Make Nuc's?

    Tavery
I don't feed my nucs until the queen is laying. The frames I use will have a good honey band on them. They don't need much feed if their not feeding brood.

Feeding queen less nucs runs a...

Re: Bees not making new queen

In the past I've had hives that seemed to make up their mind to die and I couldent prove them wrong. Never developed laying workers because of the brood, eggs and once a capped queen cell I gave them....
  4. Re: seems like my bees quit laying in several of my deeps

Nothing is wrong I suspect. The bees will lay their brood just under the honey. Where ever that is. As honey is stored the brood nest moves down.

Another scenerio. If you have screened bottoms...

Re: Supercedure Split to save Queen?

Your plan is exactly what I would do. Once both are/ if laying you can replan as needed.

    Re: Egg laying drones

Like square peg said we all knew what you meant.
When bees build a supersedure cell there's a reason. I would never tear one down. Sometimes they will build one when I can't see the reason. If I can...

    Re: extracting outdoors at night.

I extract outside, I have never extracted in the house. I could extract in the house I live in now but before there wasn't room to sling a cat.

If there's a flow on I can extract near the hives....
  8. Re: Photos of my partial sheet of foundation in deep frames -experiment

Lauri, you are a class act!
My theory on why this works so well is it because it's what the bees want. I just have a few hives and am just a hobbiest. I'm pretty much foundationless and most of my...

Re: My first year with 8 frame mediums

I don't have any 8 frame mediums but I overwinter some hives in single deep 10 frame every year with no problems.

Re: Too Late to Make Nuc's?

I've raised several queens with two frames of nurse bees. None of them were worth a dime. Four frames of eggs and open brood loaded with attending nurse bees is my minimum to build their own queen.

Re: Too Late to Make Nuc's?

I'm a little south of you, near Springfield MO. I start nucs every year at the first of August and let them raise their own queen. I build the nucs strong so by the time the queen is laying ( around...

    Re: Removing old brood frames.

I have a few old pierco frames that the comb is jet black. They seem to be a favorite with the queens in several different hives.

Re: What's this Northern Virginia weed bees love?

Lots of chicory around here. It only blooms/puts out nectar in the mornings. My bees work it when there's nothing else.

When I see bees on the chicory I know the dearth is on. Good to have as...

    Re: Black honey

Honeydew is the best guess so far I reckon. There is a lot of oak timber in the area.
However this was put up in about a three week window and then it just stopped. I would have thought honeydew...

Re: Some things I've learned about SHB

You mention oil traps but didn't say what kind. I've had problems with SHB in the past but now I have the IPK beetle trap from green beehives on all my hives.

I no longer give SHB a second...

Re: Hive scent made into a cologne/perfume

Even though I do most of my beekeeping on a 4- wheeler I often keep my suit and gloves in the truck.

While I dont buy air freshners I would buy this one.

    Re: Black honey

There seems to be a difference in opinion on which berry it tastes like. It's been called grape, blackberry, lemon, and one of my granddaughters said cinnamon.

I've never put up buckwheat honey....

    Black honey

I took a little honey off one of my hives last weekend that is as near black as honey can get. Excellent taste with a touch of berry.

  20. Re: Is it too late to make a split this year (SW Ohio)?

I'm in southwest Mo and I routinely make nucs around the first of August and let them raise their own queen. When she's laying in 30 days I'll give them another frame of capped brood and a frame of...

    Re: Should I be worried?

This tells me the temp in the hive is exactly where they want it. Add ventilation and they will go back inside and go back to work keeping the brood warm.

I like to see a hive beard like this.

Re: Brood box full of honey

  23. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

This is the way I handle this situation when it comes up. It comes up pretty often.
  24. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

My opinion is the same as slow drone's.
If I've got the picture right this is a supersedure. If the queen is still in the hive ( which I doubt) they may be ok.

Tearing down queen cells is the...

    Re: Buy queens?

If you had queen cells two weeks ago then it's not quite time to see eggs.

I would certainly give them another week or two.
