    Re: Foundation Less Frames

Same concept as wiring but using fishing line, some go straight across between the holes in the side of the frame, some make an "X" or two depending on the frame size. It adds more stability to the...

    Re: Foundation Less Frames

I'm going foundationless and the frames I use have a 45 degree bevel on the top bar (Comb Guide Top Bar by I believe Kelly). I went foundationless last year and so far the bees build right on the...

Re: My first year beekeeping enemy

I see the bees go after SHBs all the time but I've never actually seen a SHB killed. Can the bees actualy kill the beetles on a regular basis?

    Re: Orientation Flight???

Had a hive doing exactly the same last night. A mass of bees hovering in front and over the hive while a couple of doz were washboarding. No one too excited except when one of the orientating bees...

Re: Hives in a circle for varroa?

How would varroa know if it should dial back its paracitic behavior because it was occupying a single hive or pursue host distruction because there was multiple hives?

Re: Are they drinking the neighbors' Kool-Aid?

I did hear/read about bees finding some of the discarded coating for M&Ms and storing an interesting array of colored honey.
  10. Re: Not seeing much discussion on harvests- how's everyone doing?

Southern IL, the girls are doing OK but all the early cool, wet weather seemed to be detrimental. Like cg3 I'm not seeing much to write home about. Hopefully fall will better.

    Re: Trying out foundationless

Facing south has more to do with "solar gain" for the cool morning start; most of mine face east, catch the moring sun and do fine. Winter north winds are also a consideration but not this month.

Re: Bees clustered on front of hive by entrance

Mine beard less when the top is ventilated with a couple of shims, less "cooling buzz" too.

I'm in the middle of 40 acres surrounded by agricultural fields; I can’t tell you what mine are working. They’ve left everything around the house and surrounding area alone (blackberries, red &...

i don't mean to highjack the thread but I've watched bees chase and attempt to kill SHBs but never realisticlly seen one killed. Can the bees actually kill the beetles? Assuming they do, do they use...

    Re: Trying out foundationless

I'm completely foundationless using comb guide top bar frames and I haven't had a problem with them building any cross frame comb (maybe just lucky). Had a swarm move into a bait box that I couldn't...
  16. Re: Problems keeping city bees...some thoughts from a *rural* (newbie) beek...

Concern about the "traffic and collisions" because the water haulers would have to fly across and close to my main shed door seems trivial to what the city dwellers deal with on almost every side

Worked a couple of hot hives before their attitude was adjusted. If the veil came too close to your skin they would sting you in the back of the neck and under the jaw line. Keep the collar turned...

  22. Re: Trap out? Or drive them out and hope I get the queen?

Just my $.02 worth, I've never did a cutout or trap out from a tree. If they don't mind you driving a few nails into the tree I'd use a light piece of luan plywood cut to fit the opening, tack it...

Re: How far apart to place split?

Beware of the potential for robbing, either just the syrup or their weaker hive's stores. I did two 60/40 splits and adding queen cells to the 40 portion over the weekend. Had to use boardman type...

Re: Built my first hives today!

I refer to working wood and bees as part of my mental heath therapy. Both can leave me scratching my head trying to figure something out but they're still good stress relievers.
