Re: Swarm traps and Bees Just maybe!!!

    TomG right on the money....

I posted this in Difference between a HIT and a CATCH. You don't want to move them too early. I've seen them visit traps in large numbers for days to weeks...

    Re: Swarm trap disaster

Sorry to hear your troubles. I have learned such lessons in beekeeping. I too do the same thing. As soon as pollen is entering I try to get them moved and hived.

Re: 10 frame deep as swarm trap

I put screws in my first nine boxes just as you describe back in 2011. I did my next 9 traps without the screws. The last 10 were constructed without the screws. As long as you are using a strap,...

Re: How high does the trap have to be?

You will get all kinds of responses here. I would recommend putting it in a location that does not require the use of a ladder. Just for safety reasons. I used to put them all at 10 feet until...

Re: Question about Bait hives or Swarm Traps

iivydriff: I would say it probably has absolutely no bearing on whether a swarm pics your trap or not. As stated in other responses most feral hives I find have multiple entrances. If you don't...

    Re: Why is this happening?

Can you tell if they have built any comb on the outside of the box?
I don't know what causes it, but looking back through my notes and pictures I see wax built on the outside of the box and the...
  14. Re: Lost three hives this winter need swarms but when to put out traps

As a rule humans are bad at predicting the future.... You are a lot more likely to catch swarms if you have traps made and up. My established hives came through the winter strong. I think there...
  15. Re: Check out this view of one of our swarm traps.

Alright. That looks like a good one.
  16. Re: Lost three hives this winter need swarms but when to put out traps

Now is fine for putting up traps. I will be putting mine up over the next 2-3 weeks. I never treat the frames I take from deadouts. If the hive was dead and it froze for 48 hours afterwards moth...

    Re: Why is this happening?

I have had that 2 times. Can you see the queen crawling around on the outside? Both times they eventually left. Let us know the outcome.

Re: Synthetic Queen Lures - Thoughts?

Pheromone and LGO in combination may work best, but for the money LGO alone works well in Indiana. Maybe if I wasn't so cheap I'd catch more bees. Experiment and keep us all posted.

    Re: indiana traps set

Beeditch: that's a great sign. In my area those types of locations produce swarms. So every time you take down a full trap put up a new one right away....

    Good luck.

    Re: Swarm Trap Placement

awebber: It's totally like fishing. So many aspects of being successful are parallel, with patterning being the key to success. Just like smallmouth are usually going to be off secondary structure...

    Re: Swarm Trap Placement

burns375 --- Just to clarify... I target locations where there AREN’T kept hives. I look for feral bees because I don’t want swarms that were “created” by beeks feeding sugar syrup in the early...
  23. Re: Odfrank's Observations - Bees Inhabiting Potential Nesting Sites

I have noticed something like what you are describing. I have also had large numbers of scouts stay overnight in some of the traps before. The first year I trapped I thought this was just a fluke,...

    Re: Swarm Trap Placement

Either place them at those locations or somewhere on your ROUTES to and from those locations. I don't "ususally" put more than 1 trap in any 1 say square mile location. That may be wrong, but I...

    Re: Swarm trap saturation?

I agree with Mr. Bush? Spread a wide net at first. As you catch swarms you will find a "pattern" in your area. Then you repeat the pattern to be successful. It is just like fishing. Once you...
