    Re: Laying Worker Hive

Give them a frame of eggs/brood three weeks in a row. They will create a queen and the eggs will cause the laying worker to stop.

Re: Paint or not, Entrance Reducer.

I paint mine. Figure it is exposed to the weather. Not sure it matters, though.

    Re: Trees For Bees

I have a corkscrew willow in my front yard that is covered with bees in the spring. I'm assuming for the pollen. You can hear the buzz walking by it.

  4. Re: Package bees absconding - Help me figure out what I did wrong.

My first year I had a similar experience. Two packages left, one completely, the other one had about 30 bees left. Neighbor said he saw a huge swarm in a tree near his house on about day 3, while I...

  7. Re: Help Please . . . post pictures of those hive stands

I have not had to deal with 5-6 boxes yet. My 8-frame mediums are normally 4 boxes high and adding two more does not seem like a big deal.

It really is a trade off. I'm attempting to eliminate...
  8. Re: Help Please . . . post pictures of those hive stands

Here is my design, which is evolving. It can hold two 8-frame hives plus a 5-frame nuc if needed. It is about 18" tall, 40" wide, and 20" deep. Legs are at a 15 degree angle. I like the ability...

Re: Michael Palmer The Sustainable Apiary

I saw the MP nuc videos and was inspired to create some nucs. I started with 9 and lost 1. I have individual nucs, some mediums (3 boxes high) and a couple of deeps (two boxes high). I pushed them...

Re: How to clean plastic foundation

Yes. I did it the other day and was sopping wet and covered in wet hive debris. Cleaned them up good though. I did paint on some wax, but probably could have skipped it.

I have an electric pressure washer and it works fine. Cold water from the hose works. Prepare to get wet.

Re: When are we in the clear?

I inspected my hives yesterday. One nuc had starved since inspected in Jan. 80% of the rest were very close.

Re: Hive Tracks is still churning

When you define a queen for the hive it would be nice to be able to pick the queen mother. Then it may be possible to draw the family tree for queens in the future.

One way to support nucs and...

Re: Hive Tracks is still churning

You can check the hive, cut it, then switch to the other yard and paste it.
  16. Re: Anyone still have nucs for sale in central Virginia?

I have two over wintered nucs, 5-deep frames each. The queens are Italians.

    Re: Honey Prices For 2012!

I sell mine for $8 in 1 lb jar and $15 in 2 lb jar.

I have seen honey at small shops retail for $11-13 for a 1lb jar.

I saw a square of comb honey priced at $27. That was a 4"x4" square!

Re: Some REALLY dark honey in Western New York

If it has a reddish color when held to the light, it may be Tulip Poplar. At least that is what I was told by more experienced beeks.

    - Reduce size of the hive to that which can be defended
