  1. Re: Robbing Screen, Entrance Reducer, Both?

I run with entrance reducers on all year and apply robber screens as needed.

    Re: Double four frame nuc

Share the resources among you hives.
Take from the strong and give to the weak to give them a boost. Either among weaker nucs or full sized hives.
But make sure you understand why the weak ones are...

Re: Help! Need idea to save these bees.

    Use a pool cover.
They go to a reliable source.
If the water source is not always available to them they will look elsewhere.
  4. Re: Multiple things going on, confused on if I'm doing this right.....

    My hives are bearding too.
It's not a heat issue, it's an unemployed forager issue.
We are in the midst of a dearth. Nothing for them to gather.
So, there is a bunch of hang-abouts around the hive...

  6. Re: leave partial supers on? flow is over... they need winter honey

I use the Mann Lake frame feeders with caps & ladders.
I believe they are called the "Pro Feeders".
I prefer the gallon sized but have a few of the larger 2 gallon.
So, I give a gallon at a time....

    Re: Backflipping bees

The worker was evicting the drone.
Kicking him out because of lean times.
The drones only mate and eat. As we get into the summer dearth forage dwindles.
Less food for the hive. So, they are...
  8. Re: leave partial supers on? flow is over... they need winter honey

    I don't.
After the spring flow is over and we go into the summer dearth I take the supers off, feed and treat for mites.
Getting them built up ready to catch the fall flow.
Then when it hits I put...
  9. Re: Small Hive Beetles situation in your area

    Not a problem here.
When I do see them they are usually an indication of a failing or struggling hive.
Easily remedied by reducing the area that the bees have to defend or giving the hive a boost...
  10. Re: 100% of my splits requeened themselves!

    Re: Is this normal?

    That's a great pic.
The hive in my pic wasn't swarming, just chocked full of bees. I later split it down after the flow and made several hives out of it. Just a great hive.

    Re: Robbing and top entrances

I run top & bottom entrances.
The top entrance is just a two inch notch I cut into the inner covers with the telescoping tops pushed forward allowing them room to access.
When I see robbing I just...

    Re: Lost bees to ants

You will find that some will post on here that ants don't bother bees, but I beg to differ.
I have had strong colonies abscond due to the constant pressure put on them by ants.
    I tried every method...

  17. Re: What birds or insects have you seen eating bees?

I am just another guy here that has observed bumbles catching bees at the entrance.

    Re: Crushing honey comb

I use a regular ol' spoon.
Scrape the honey & comb down to the foundation, strain through a coarse sieve like pictured above.
No need to crush anything. The spoon does all the work.
    Then put the...

I have to add, ants may not kill a hive but I have witnessed three strong hives of mine abscond last year to escape the pressure that ants put on them.
