There can be only one! (OK, maybe not all the time, but most of the time)
I see a couple of things that could go wrong with attempting this type of virgin queen "banking" within a colony.
#1 - A...
Thanks Michael!
As the main flow is almost upon me (and my bees) I'm considering doing a cut-down split this year. All I have ever heard is that the timing is critical and must be done shortly before the main...
Before you do any of the good suggestions above for dispatching and reusing the old queen, pull the entire frame aside that has the old queen/bees and put it in a nuc until you are sure that the new...
Yes Option a), this would be crazy high. Sometimes you'll have hives that are 4 deeps tall (or =). Doubling up that and not only would you need a ladder and would hurt something working the hives,...
Yes, that's what robbing is, but you won't likely see it with few other bees around. As other have mentioned, only week hives seem to get robbed, though you can accidentially cause one hive to start...
If you have someone local selling overwintered nucs in the early spring (April or early May), there's no way I would suggest a beginner turn that down. Those bees have proven themselves geneticaly...
My wife and I were tired of buying people crap from stores for holiday's, birthdays, etc.. So, beekeeping was a way that we could start a hobby that usually pays for itself while at the same time...
Depends on the cell type, of course.
I've measured the following:
Worker Brood Width: 4.6 to 5.1 mm on bees I considered fully regressed; no average calc'd nor does it matter
Drone Brood...
Been beekeeping for 4 years. No treatments.
As for winter losses . . .
Year 1: 1 Italian Package - 100% Dead
- Lg. cell wax foundation - nosema or disentary, not sure which.
Year 2:...
RZRBCK,
I agree with you. Unless that colony was going to swarm anyway or there is more space between the queen and the open brood (say 2 boxes) I don't see why they would make queen cells...
Indeed.
And don't believe anything you hear about f-less bees producing less honey than bees raised on foundation of any kind.
They also produce 100 lbs of honey/year with f-less.
Last season I...
Running foundationless outyards is not really that much trouble with a little f-less experience at home and an appropriatly enacted plan.
I started 2 packages completely f-less last spring in an...
It might also be yellow spring Witch Hazel (at least I think the pollen is yellow).
Gray pollen from Western Red Cedar is also available right now.

Indeed she does. Not only does she do inspections, as of this year she captured a couple of swarms and helped with 5 cutouts. Two of these cut outs we did on the same day, and one was in the...
Interesting. That really would make the whole process lighter, but shallows might not allow for much of a functional comb height. Without actually trying it out, it seems that the bees would prefer...
I tend to go against the grain frequently and I don't have too many colonies (yet), and plan to stay between 20 and 30 colonies for awhile. So, switching to all mediums wouldn't be too much of a...
Good deal. I've had really good winter survival in my area with 9 frame deeps and follower-boards, though iwombat has had the same success with 8 frame mediums. I'll give this idea a try and see...
So, it sounds like it worked fine for you, other than the fact they were deep frames and standard 10 frame boxes.
Did you use the nucs as supers? Or just to get comb drawn?
You had no...
Sounds like what I've put together for the same purpose. I've been using those to transfer honey off my carport roof, where 4 of my 20 hives are located.
They do around here at all, but...
Funny you said that! It's exactly what I posted a couple of years back. I also said something to the effect of "Don't any of you have friends? You all seem to be a likable enough".
Pulling out...
Good idea. I'll consider that as well. And yes, I'll post pics if it works out (or not).
-Reid
I'm not talking about supering with only 1 nuc, but 2 nucs side-by-side. There would be absolutely no structural difference between a full deep and two nucs in this configuration.
-Ken
Have any of you tried using nucs as supers?
Does it work well enough?
If you've tried it, what problem/benifits did you observe?
I've seen a few pictures of this setup floating around the web,...
