I live in Northwestern Pennsylvania and our normal temps in the winter are in the single digits to mid 30's. I leave my screened bottom boards wide open all winter and have not had a problem yet.

They are putting away a ton of nectar, but the Goldenrod is blooming also. They are working the Buckwheat until about 1 pm then move to the Goldenrod.
I planted mine at 50 pounds per acre. It will choke the weeds out for sure.
This is my Buckwheat field. It is also about 5 and a half foot tall. The bees have been working it like crazy.29872988

It was $0.76 a pound here in Pa

There is a place in Meadville Pennsylvania that you can buy Mancan Buckwheat. It is called Ernst seed co.
Andrew, I have not seen that movie in a really long time! I made 40 gallons of mead last year from my golden rod honey. A winery may be a good idea.
I do sell it, but to very few people. Most people around here do not prefer it.
It is not that I don't know what to do with it. It is just that my goldenrod honey usually sits for a while, then it usually always crystalizes. I thought if I crystalized it on my own it would be...
This year I was thinking if I get any goldenrod surplus I would make creamed honey out of most of it since it will be solid in a couple of months anyway. Didn't know if there were any negative...
Do a newspaper combine and you will be fine.
Here in PA it dropped a TON of rain but no hail.
I know Bush Insurance in Cambridge Springs Pa. will sell you liability insurance for selling Honey. I am not sure if the will cover liability on on hives on another property or not, but it is worth a...
