    Re: Question for foundationless folks?

If one was truly concern about this wouldn't it be as simple as cutting some opening in the plastic to allow for tunnels to be formed if the bees wished? That's also why the corners of the plastic...

    Re: Swarm, supercedure, neither?

Well...here it is 6 days later...did an inspection today and I found both queens. My marked queen and the new queen. They had a frame between them but both frames that the queens were on were full of...

    Re: Swarm, supercedure, neither?

Which brings up a question...will an unmated queen lay eggs? I know they need to be fertilized to be any good but would she still lay? I just ask because there aren't many drones in the hive, and I...

    Re: Swarm, supercedure, neither?

Found out today their intentions...they have a new queen. She looked good and she's laying so it's all good in the bee hood I suppose.

    Re: NC Town Has Banned Beekeeping;

That sux. Glad I don't live there. Just make sure they have a search warrant before letting them in your house. Without one you don't have to let them in.

    Re: Stop feeding pollen patties?

I was just reading about this and it seems that many feel that pollen patties in the fall is more beneficial than in the spring. I just threw one on my hive yesterday. Within minutes the bees were...

Re: What is on my bees

I have gray bees in my hive too. Next time I'm in there I'll pay closer attention to whether it looks like pollen or whether they are walking normally.
  9. Re: An Interesting Bee Sting Question. Please Help Me Figure This Out.

I'm 35 and a first year keeper. I have never been stung by a honey bee until this year. I have only been stung once by my girls and if I was wearing my jacket and veil that would not have happened....

    Re: moths in the hives

None are ok. One moth can lay hundreds of eggs. I say this but it seem pretty much impossible to keep them out. It's going to be up to the bees to keep things in check if larva start showing up. If...

    Re: Swarm, supercedure, neither?

That's my thought...same amount of bees but less room for them to have to cover.

Re: dead bees on the ground!

Pick a few up and look at them. You should be able to tell if they are drones or not.

    Re: moths in the hives

Yes...probably wax moths...they will destroy your hive if you don't keep a very close eye on things.

    Re: Swarm, supercedure, neither?

Yeah...I'm not going to tear it down...even if they want to swarm...I'd rather split them and deal with it that way rather than continue to fight against them wanting to swarm. There is definitely a...

    Swarm, supercedure, neither?

Just wondering if there was a way to tell...I'm asking because a couple weeks ago I had a queen cell...but the day after I found it the bees destroyed it. At that time I had 2 deeps but really only...

Re: Cinder blocks to deter skunks?

We have a lot of skunks around here...smell them almost nightly...I solved any issues I might have by switching to a top entrance only.
  22. Re: Got Stung AGAIN! Through My Brushy-Mountain Goatskin Gloves.... Any Suggestions?

See...that's the point...I didn't want tattooed but since I wasn't wearing my gloves when I walked in to a tattoo shop one day I ended up inked...so now I wear my gloves everywhere I go.
  23. Re: What to do with all these peppermint sticks? Should I feed the girls?

Just because I can eat something and so can the bees...doesn't mean it's good for them (or me). Is corn starch good for bees? Don't hard candies (peppermint sticks) often contain corn starch?

    I...
  24. Re: What to do with all these peppermint sticks? Should I feed the girls?

I'd eat a t-bone steak if you offered it to me but doesn't mean I'd slap a hunk of beef on the top bars of my hive and ring the dinner bell for the bees.
  25. Re: What to do with all these peppermint sticks? Should I feed the girls?

Don't they contain corn starch among other things that might not be so good for the bees?
