  6. Re: Upset neighbors. Must part with or move my hives.

Sorry to hear your neighbors are upset. That really sucks. I also tend to believe that most people just need an education of the differences between honey bees and all the other stinging "bees"....
  7. Re: Vacuum Packed Honey in a Jar Experiment

Please post pictures after a few hours/days. The outcome is interesting to me. I tried this with a pump that would pull 20" and not much happened. I only had it under vacuum for a few minutes.

Re: How did you get into beekeeping?

A few years ago I stopped at a Honey Shack to buy a couple of jars for a gift basket. I thought WHAT $12 each?? ......you have to be kidding!! (I also was on a recon mission for the supplies needed...

    Re: Analyzing sugar roll results

    >What if one did a powdered sugar roll and then, when finished, if you did an alcohol wash, would you find the other half of the mites?<

    A not so long explanation

They have us by the short hairs....at 30 mpg we can go about 170 miles round trip for $20.

I'll pay the 20 not to deal with traffic

    Re: Analyzing sugar roll results

    Actually Mark,
Thank you for explaining the formula. I had no idea what the numbers were for. I am glad you did because I would have used the same formula with an alcohol wash.

    With what you...

    Re: Analyzing sugar roll results

1/2 cup of bees from open brood divide mite count by 3 multiply that number by 2

I just put the formula in excel and plugged in the mite count.

Is the formula wrong? I thought it is what I...

    Analyzing sugar roll results

These are the results from yesterdays sugar roll. I expected that I would have seen a lower percentage of mites in the nucs that raised their own queen. Hive 2 was queenless from late May to July...

    Re: proceidure for mite check

Thank you for your reply John... your explanation of the 300 bee sample vs the sticky board is exactly what I needed.

Now I can check, check again and treat as necessary.

    Re: proceidure for mite check

    OK ill rephrase my question......

Does it matter if I take 300 bees from a 5X5 nuc, sugar shake them, take the (mite count)x(3)/(2) to get my percentage of infestation.

    Will my percentage of...

    Re: proceidure for mite check

I understand a standard sample size of 1/2 cup (300 bees) to use per determined charts. 300 bees out of a 5X5 nuc is a larger percentage of bees than 300 out of a dbl deep 10 frame. I cant seem to...
