Re: Splits vs Grafting for increase?

Beejihn is right. Make your cell builder then place finished cells. You can make a hive queenless and cut finished cells out, but lots of work

    Re: Feeding Bees

Last week I had no open nectar in 9 of 18 hives. I fed them under cover and open fed. Fed about 75 lbs of sugar in a 1:1 ratio. Went today everything had food. Cost of about $70. What is a lost hive...

Re: Looking for mid to late summer pollen plants

It's my understanding buckwheat requires dark to germinate. I've mowed and also disced it in, but never got a second regrowth

    Re: Strachan Queens ???

I ordered 5 this year. I lost 3 because of the issue I couldn't make the split strong enough. Got them after June 1, and I had been in hospital for 10 days and couldn't lift and manage my apairy. The...

    Re: Mann Lake disappointment

Apparently, there are thousands of new beekeepers. Most want to be treatment free because of all the youtube videos that tout that experienced beekeepers are " doing it wrong". There will be a lot of...

Re: How Often Do Bees Really Build Up Too Early?

I think in terms of length of day. Reason we are at least 2 weeks ahead of normal on temperature, timing of blooms. But the sun is the same. The first swarms I see have always coincided with Bradford...
  8. Re: Apitherapy user claiming worker bees don't die after stinging?

Well the key difference in their mind, if the bee flys off he lives.

    Re: Grafting %

I'm consistently about 20%. My first problem is my cell builder is not strong enough. I have a small yard and not enough resources. If all 30 grafts I took couldn't use all the cells.

    Re: Storage of Queens?

When they were stored, I assume they were mated, but had they been laying?

    Wet frame

I learn something almost every time I go to the bee yard. I was doing my inspections today, I came across a nuc that I was hoping to add frames. I had done a peek about 3 weeks ago. Bees were in...

Re: Getting seeds for what bees like

Not all plants sold for bees do they use. If they find something else, even if further away they may go for it. A word about buckwheat, they will only use it till about 10 o'clock. The heat of day...

Re: Fast way to grow one nuc to 40 hives

Some of the rate limiting division is it takes a month to make a queen. Also 3 frames would be the minimum split size. So, a split in April will have a laying queen in May, it then would need to...

I've been thinking. That is scary thing to do.The earliest swarm I have seen in my area is first week of April. That means build up should start last week of February. That said also depends on...

Re: Which size hives are most productive?

All beekeeping is local. I learned a lot from Fatbeeman videos, but he is in Georgia. They get cold weather, but not like other areas of US. In one he states, bees can make enough honey for winter...

Re: Why is shipping not common anymore?

One thing not mentioned besides bees arriving dead. I think many apairies can sell everything they have available locally. They have no need to ship

    Re: Value of used equipment.

Get a book, and compare it to retail. As to smokers, I don't know the life of one, as mine is 5 years. Hive tools, I keep planting several a year, but never got a harvest. If the woodenware isn't dry...
