    Hygienic Bee's

What constitutes hygienic bee characteristics? Reason I ask is last week when I had a bunch of comb torn out and bee's hauling out pupa because of SHB larva or wax moth larva (not sure which one for...

Re: Inspection today and need some help.

I just noticed this, if you look in the third picture in the center just a tick below center. Does that look like a SHB larva to you. It does to me because it has what looks like little legs on it.

  4. Re: Starting to think beekeepers are cheap. lol

As a hobby it can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. I'm a gadget guy so its not as cheap for me. This hobby also caused me to buy some new woodworking things which of course I will...

Re: Inspection today and need some help.

These are both new hives and fresh foundation or foundationlees frames. All the comb drawn is what they have done. If we don't get the rain I'm going into both hives tomorrow and rid of what I can...

Re: Inspection today and need some help.

I didn't know they could get in with an active hive. I thought it was always in dormant comb.
You think I should go in and remove what I can?

Inspection today and need some help.

Last week when I checked the hives everything seems to be OK. After the inspection I noticed some drones being booted along with pupa. Went on for a few days. Didn't think much about it because...

Re: bees dragging out pupa. why?

I have a hive thats been doing the same thing for a week. Since they were kicking out live drones I just figured the pupa they were bringing out were drones too. Some were developed enough and had...
  11. Re: Considering all medium box hives, any reasons not to?

I like to make things come out even so you don't have part of a figure. Like a deep is 9.25 or what ever your lumber is I divide that by 12 so each figure is .770 wide.

I'm sure others will have a...

Yes it is true. But that fact is with mediums your total height is only 2" taller and you loose 17 square inches of comb, over running 2 deeps. Not much of a con IMHO for someone that is small...
  13. Re: Considering all medium box hives, any reasons not to?

3 med are no taller than 2 deeps. I'm new this year and bought deep brood chambers and med for the suppers. I plan to expand some next year and I'll be going all med. I just want all one size and as...

    Re: Splines vs finger joints

I don't think it will be as good as a finger joint but will be way better than a butt joint. I don't think I would use 1/4". I think I would use more like 1/8 or 3/16. Thats what I was going to do...

Yes I started feeding them again last week. But local beek said I shouldn't have too. Not sure I just want them to have good numbers come winter and hopefully survive.

    Robber Screen

If a robber screen is installed I assume the bee's will need to re-orientate? If how long will this upset the normal flow of things?

    Thanks

Re: Should I still be feeding?

Love the info here. You have spent a lot of time to do this and the reward is more knowledge to do better in the future. What kind of scale did you use?

    Thanks
