    Re: SHB honey supers

Will that work even if there are adult beetles, pollen, and brood comb in the mix?

    Re: Question on Apivar

This is one of the attractive features of the shallows over an excluder over deeps system - no doubt about what is for harvest and not.

    Re: Mark's new Honey Label

Really I like it the way it is - you look like you are serious about what you do. Honest. Not like some celebrity or politician with a fake smile just because a camera is present.
  4. Re: Found worms in my mite trap under the hive??? What are they?

I don't know what they are, but they don't look like wax moth or hive beetle larva to me.

    Re: Mark's new Honey Label

I like it. There are sooo many costumes that would work with your look - pirate, Mark Twain, Papa Smurf, Colonel Sanders, Santa, Gortons fish stick guy, Crusty beekeeper... You would need to smile...
  6. Re: Morning inspection -- a lesson in "should'ves"

That doesn't look too bad to me - except I don't see any honey. Unless there is quite a lot that you just didn't have in the pictures i would feed them. I would leave the comb alone until such a...

    Re: SHB honey supers

Here in hive beetle land it is just best practice to plan so that supers get extracted and returned for cleaning as quick as possible. I can't swear that they will infest perfectly clean supers, but...

Re: Beer Keg to Kettle Conversion

Is there a tried and true design available for dyi brew kettles?

I'm a dedicated do it myselfer, but at this point I Know (capital K) that design version 1.0 rarely turns out exactly as hopped...

Re: Learning curve for robber screen

It might take several days for it to be completely routine. I use them all the time and i have never had any problem caused by rain harming the bees. It would make most sense to put the robber...
  10. Re: Never Treated Before- Asking Advice

In my area hives have a fair amt of brood - second round or so of fall buildup, and using MAQS might not be ideal because it tends to kill open brood. Your hives in your area might be different. In...

    Re: Honey B Healthy

The makers of HBH can't really make overt claims about what it is supposed to be good for other than as an unregulated "dietary supplement." It contains known natural miteacides and antibacterials...

    Re: SHB & Plastic Frames

About 20% of my frames are plastic - some hives have nearly all plastic, some have few or none. I also have to constantly consider SHB in management decisions. Some of my hives have many beetles,...

    Re: Honey B Healthy

There is No need to do Anything to ensure acceptance and prevent fighting when swapping frames of bees - except make sure you aren't moving a queen. Other than that they will not fight. This is...

    Re: What type of nuc's

I've tried everything from 3 half frames and up. My standard 8 frame medium makes a fine nuc without having to keep extra odd sized equipment. It is worth having a few setups with bottoms connected...

    Re: Exposed bee faces: brood

OK, if the rest of the hive looks better then it Might not be so dire, but when you say "look pretty decent for so late in the year." I'm not sure what you mean, because I am seeing some of the best...

    Re: Exposed bee faces: brood

The one adult bee has funky wings. If the whole hive looks like this it is probably a lost cause this late in the season. If i was going to try to save it (which i prob wouldn't personally) i would...

Re: Fall flow not happening in Midwest?

They have probably been continuously robbed. Are your big hives well stocked? If so that is where your nuc stores are.
  19. Re: What size hardware cloth to keep mice out?

Maybe he will chime in here but I'm pretty sure Michael Palmer uses 1/2 x1/2. 1/4 makes it hard for them to get dead bees out. I've had mouse damage, but never through a 3/8" entrance reducer -...

    Re: fume board honey harvest

They work best when the sun shining on them keeps them nice and warm, but the stronger products will work even when it is cloudy or cool. Personally I can't always wait until the conditions are...
  21. Re: Combining vs killing failing hives?

Just for the sake of discussion - are you sure they aren't queenless because of disease? If not then is it worth the chance of spreading it?

I assume that a queen might be superseded if she has...
  22. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

It's hard to do much more than guess without a structured study. Too many obfuscating factors. I still value those anecdotal stories though. I think we have a subconscious ability to suss things...
  23. Combining vs killing failing hives?

In another thread the subject of killing hives came up, and experienced reputable folks spoke up - mostly against killing bees.

No one likes to kill bees - I certainly don't want to and never have...

    Re: finally, fall flow!

The early goldenrod is already fading here - and the flow is a little bit disappointing so far. There certainly is not going to be honey to extract (unless something big changes) but at least they...
  25. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

I haven't made that connection no. But I may have just not noticed. The thing is most of my SBBs are built for SHB IPM so hopefully they have fewer on average.
