Re: A down side to beekeeping.

I had an apiary near an auto body shop. The owner would finish a car, buff it nice and shiny, and move the car out to the parking lot. When the owner picked it up, it would be covered with yellow...

    Re: Extra queen

Funny you ask this today. I have a queen bank with caged queens over a 7 wire excluder. I set it up before I left for EAS-Kdentucky on 7/26. I checked it today, and there are still live queens.

    Do...

    Re: Harvesting Honey Question

Because they are not capped doesn't mean the honey is not ripe. At this point, in Massachusetts, I would doubt there is enough of a flow left to cap the uncapped combs. You can test it with a...

    Re: First hard frost overnight

Various Asters are still in bloom here, but mostly gone by. Look at the center of the flowers. How many have a yellow center and how many have turned brown? Mostly brown here.

    Re: Fall Feeding Strategy?

Remember Angel, you're in Kentucky. Our bees will cease brood rearing soon, and it will be too cold to give them additional feed if they need it for winter. Light colonies here in the north need to...
  8. Re: The End of F.W.JONES beekeeping supplies...

Let's go back to the beginning. I believe I left Richard with 1800 pounds of wax, not 1168. I have no proof, as I never thought I needed one. I've always been fond of Jean and Richard, and why would...

    Re: Fall Feeding Strategy?

You're seeing a lot more bees in the hive than you like? Why? A large cluster with enough feed to last until spring is exactly what I want in my hives.

One thing...I think you're target weight...

Up so dead bees don't block the entrance. :)

Every question has two answers. :)

Actually, I don't like those tiny entrances created by entrance reducers. Not enough ventilation for northern...

Re: Two hives or one to start

You're assuming both colonies will make the winter. You might lose one, and a split from the other will re-stock the dead colony, or re-queen a weak one.

But suppose they both do make the winter,...
