    Re: Why Top Bar Hives?

All the reasons listed above. Plus, it is fun to have something different than most beeks have going on. I think free-standing comb is a thing of wonder and beauty. I love having pure wax to make...

    Re: Top Bar Design

Hi, AFC--It's exciting to see so many folks getting into topbar hives. I just came through my first summer with them and really have enjoyed them. So, I'm a total newbie and what I say should be...

    Re: Eating comb honey?

Awesome for you! I'm really having fun playing with the wax, especially since I don't have too much honey to enjoy yet. But, all those newbie mistakes that made my comb tear and fall at least have a...

    Re: Eating comb honey?

Ooooh, the wax! I made lip balm and body butter all summer with my extra wax. I'll never go back to storebought again! Now I'm looking forward to trying my hand at soap made with bee's wax. It's said...

    Re: Eating comb honey?

True, true. I think I would need about 70 lb of comb honey before I would be willing to sell even one square!!

    Re: Eating comb honey?

I'm totally with you on the outrageous cost of comb honey, a treasured treat for me all my life!

I save the wax, melt it down and use it to make lip balm and body butter.

Re: Top Bar Hives in Ohio

Well, duh! What does he thinks happens to HIS bees FOR SURE when he blows them out onto the ground each fall?

    Re: Rooftop beekeeping question

Hmmm... Maybe nighttime beekeeping? Seems I've read a few threads about that :D Or, the nudist thread, although I guess that might be even more noticeable than a bee suit.

    Good luck! Beautiful...

    Re: natural cell question

Hi slee--I just use the wood strips also (paint stir sticks). I have read on this or other forums that when using foundation strips, the bees will go on to build whatever size they want. I have...

    Re: Interesting article

As an organic CSA farmer married to a conventional crop farmer, we have had many arguments in our household about the pros and cons of each method. I used to be angry with my husband for his...

    Re: Interesting article

You're absolutely right. I would rather watch a particular segment of my CSA garden die than use chemicals on it. Are you referring, BTW, to nicotinids (SP?) as the newer chemical? I also heard...

Re: Any opinions of "USDA" Russians?

VERY helpful. I can see how they would freak out an Italian keeper, especially a new beek like me :)

    Re: Interesting article

I, too, am an organic food producer and heartily believe in it. I, too, question chemicals as the SOLE reason for CCD. They have been around since after WWII. Why would they only 40+ years later...

    Re: Interesting article

I actually have the magazine but am too lazy to run upstairs to look that part up. I assume either they are talking about blooming hedges to improve habitat and diversity (especially with...

Ditto. I have Italians, am starting to get enthused about Russians and would have both fairly close together. Anyone?

    Re: Organic honey

That might depend on your state, too. In WI, you can use the word "organic" if you abide by the same principals certified organics do but if you earn less than $5000/year from your products.
  18. Re: a blob of bee questions from a new bee guy.

    Hi zyphnab, and welcome!

I'll try to give you some info into #5 and #6.

#5. I have topbars, my first year. I love them! I would especially encourage you to put in observation windows if you...

pcelar--Don't leave us hanging like that!! :D Tell us more. The very name makes me think of bees that would thrive in my cold WI winters.

    Re: Organic honey

As a producer, I agree it could be frustrating and nearly impossible. Definitely impossible for me, as I am surrounded by conventional cropland.

As a consumer, labels have to MEAN something. How...

    Re: Starting a foundationless hive

I have topbars, foundationless. One of the most interesting parts is taking a close look at the combs they build. I just pulled out all the empties in prep for winter (robbed out) and the size of...

Re: Newbee asks are Italians lazy?

I installed two 3# Italian packages in topbars in early May. They seemed really proficient at growing their colony. Both hives swarmed once, one possibly twice. I also made splits from each hive to...

    Re: Organic honney

Hi pcelar--I read something about this a while back. To be truly "organic," I believe the entire foraging area for your bees (miles in diameter) must be organic land also. I would imagine this would...

Re: Plight of the Honey Bee

You may be right, devdog, but I would argue with the logic that says bees and humans are affected in the same way by the same things.

Re: Worst place to get stung?

Does this have anything to do with your screen name? :)

I figure I've gotten about 50 this first season, so I've started wearing gloves :) The worst I ever got I wasn't even working the hives,...
