  4. What pollen is available before the trees bud out?

Im in NE Ohio. My bees today are bringing in light yellow almost white colored pollen. I dont see anything in bloom except for some crocuses. The willows and maples have not bloomed yet, as far as I...

Is it bad to leave robber screens on?

In the winter? Does it hinder their ability to take cleansing flights?

I was surprised how much pollen mine were bringing in the other day. Even after three hard frosts.

Re: new beekeeper in NW Pa

I made 3 splits off my hive this past summer. The original queen produced four nice queens that all returned from their mating flights. I unfortunately rolled and killed her.

I bought a hive from a retiring commercial beekeeper in NW Pa this spring also. Probably the same guy (James Powell?)

Re: Theory About Upper Entrance in Winter

I purchased Honey Run Apaiaries' all-season ventilated/insulated tops with an upper entrance for my hives. This will be my first winter with bees. Not sure if I am going to wrap or not.
  15. Is it too late to combine 2 weak hives in NE Ohio?

Two of my hives will not be built up enough I think to overwinter. One hive has 6-7 full frames of bees, brood, honey, etc and the other hive is a full 8 frame deep. Both queens are new this summer...

  17. Re: Upland shotgun selection: confusing recommendations!

I dont think you can go wrong with a Mossberg 500 pump. Very affordable and pretty durable for the price.
  18. Re: Upland shotgun selection: confusing recommendations!

Poor pumpkins, they have feelings, too.

    Wow smell the goldenrod nectar.

Now I know what people meant on here when they said you can smell goldenrod nectar curing. I can smell my hives several feet away. I must say that the smell is kind of appealing to me.

    Re: U.S. water ph map

So should hard water (4.3 range) have vinegar or lemon juice added to it? I assume the lemon juice is the acid, right?

    Honey and type 2 diabetes

If so, do you still eat your honey? I have seen conflicting views on honey and diabetes. Some say it is good for diabetics. Others say its the same as any sugar and should be cut out. Any opinions?
  25. Re: What if my two splits dont build up in time for winter?

Both hives have very nice queens that are laying great. They are bringing in lots of goldenrods stores.
