    Re: Mean Bees

I have noticed with my own bees that any sort of tinkering with the entrance or entrance reducer really brings an aggressive response. If the hive was being robbed that may explain aggressive...
  2. Re: Can you usually keep more hives in a more urban area?

Zeus- If you really like bees get some books or go to Michael Bush's website LINK, join a beekeeping club then start a couple hives to see if you like it and feel you could make a profit. I've got 5...
  3. Re: Signs of Robbing (through an observation window) with video

Good question, they do seem to be rather excited both inside and at the entrance. Lot's of drone activity at the entrance also. Fuzzy bees may be just orienting (youngsters). I've never seen inside...

    Re: Painting

I use the Behr Marquee and even after a week of drying it will still stick together (It would make a fine glue). I rub both top and bottom edges with a pound block of beeswax, works great.

Behr Marquee $220 for 5 gallons. I use it in semi-gloss ultra white on my boxes.

    Re: Cleaning the hive? (Video)

They are scratching the surface with their front tarsal claws. I believe it's some kind of cleaning action. Sometime my hives will get dirty and the bees leave little scratching marks in the dirt and...

I use Kreg 2" pan head screws with coarse threads in stainless, I'd bet they hold better than smooth wire nails. Look at the teeth on these!

By "electric" are we referring to an airless paint sprayer? Also what does everyone prefer gloss, semi-gloss or flat paint?

  12. Re: 7D nails for supers and hive bodies (Galvanized vs hot dipped, vs electro-galvani

    Sizes of nails, for US
The size of a nail is determined by its length. In some types a definite relationship exists between the length and the diameter of the shank. To illustrate this point,...

  14. Re: Any ideas on what I saw going on in the beeyard this morning?

Perhaps some lemongrass oil and used brood comb would work better than "drew them over to a swarm box banging a tire iron on a hub cap". But I've never tried the hubcap so I don't really know...

I've got both the Pestmall ventilated jacket and full suit, both of which I've used extensively and would recommend- especially if you're on a budget. Both of mine have all brass zippers though.

Re: Newbee questions - So. Cal.

If you've got a group of bees outside all night you're hive could be too crowded. Take a look inside to see how much free room they have and add a super as needed.

Sounds like the may have swarmed, or otherwise requeening. If you wanted to make sure they do well you might consider transferring a frame of eggs/brood from the stronger hive to the weaker.
