    Re: Poisoned bee hives

Humans aren't native to North America (even the first native Americans immigrated from somewhere else).

Maybe these people should start their purification process by eliminating themselves first?

    I do the same.
  4. Re: How accurate is mite count on a simple paper or bottom board alone?

Scpossum is correct and I should have been more complete in my answer. As he said, the bees will stick to the Vaseline if you don't run a screened bottom board of some sort. Also, for the...
  5. Re: How accurate is mite count on a simple paper or bottom board alone?

Maybe coat the paper with Vaseline to ensure any mites that fall on it aren't blown away by the wind or otherwise fall off before you can count them?

If you don't see large mite numbers after...
  6. Re: How accurate is mite count on a simple paper or bottom board alone?

Not sure why you wouldn't see large mite drops with OAV. I've always had huge mite drops whenever I use OAV. Are you sure you are using OAV correctly?

  7. Re: I weighed my hives today....not at all what I expected

Grozzie2 - nice looking weight data! I'd love to learn how you weigh your hives. Any photos?
  8. Re: PLEASE HELP: Slightly Confused and Panicked New Beekeeper

To keep track of queen lineage, I label my caught swarms based on either location (e.g. "Green Mountain" queen) or landowner name (e.g. "Johnson" queen). Purchased queens are labeled with the...

    Re: Checking hives without gloves?

I am a big fat chicken. I wear a full suite including gloves whenever I open a hive.

  11. Re: How to repel or eradicate nuisance Honeybees?

I'd like to see a photo of this:

"I assure you, they are on the side, the tops, the floats, the noodles, the steps and top of the ladder, the skimmer, the hoses, salt water chlorinizer, and...

Sticking in a Russian once a southern package gets establish is indeed in vogue right now. But I would consider:

    Re: Winter is coming...

Lots of bee different strains survive winters in your area just fine. Why do you think yours won't?

Re: Collecting cool apiary photos - care to add?

    Thanks!

Just out of the picture to the left, is a heavy duty wooden staircase I built as the first step in starting my rooftop apiary. No bears, but I have had some pretty big raccoons access the...

Re: Treating for mites or NOT

Re: Hive not tended too for 6 years

What about transferring the hive, frame-by-frame into new boxes? Treat any wild comb as you would a cut-out, and cut it out and rubber band into new frames. Let the "new" hive then sit for a day in...

    Re: serious varroa infestation

I use oxalic acid vapor in the Fall after harvest. OA works really well.

What's the best way to treat when there are honey supers on?
  22. Re: 1:1 sugar mix vs. 2:1 sugar mix--> ? regarding pros cons

The first post in a thread starts a conversation. It is up to the OP to glean what is useful.

In this case you are not getting a cut-and-dried answer because, outside of feeding syrup during a...

Re: Dang the luck ... allergy verified.

I have never been stung through my Ultra Breeze bee suit. I frequently work my hives with just boxers and a t-shirt under the Ultra Breeze when it is hot, but perhpas that is TMI . . . .
  24. Re: 1:1 sugar mix vs. 2:1 sugar mix--> ? regarding pros cons

I, too, wonder what is the support for these two statements . . . ?
  25. Re: What price to charge for strong beehives I have to sell?

But, I think that is the critical point. Hobbyists get into beekeeping because they want to "grow" the bees themselves. Buying something already grown by someone else doesn't appeal, regardless of...
