Re: SHB populations low this year?

Somewhere on here I read that you shouldn't have a compost bin anywhere near the beehives. I had one last year and I had lots of SHB. I don't have one this year and I just saw my first beetle this...

    Can anyone identify this bee?

Can someone identify the big yellow striped bee on the right side of this picture. It was working the sunflowers alongside the bumblebees today. It's too big for a yellow jacket and it's too long...

Re: Collecting cool apiary photos - care to add?

Since honeybees came over with the colonists they celebrate Independence Day just like we do.

If it's stuffed with bees how do you know there's no queen? Someone is laying a lot of eggs.

Re: Are You In The Closet?

I don't mind showing what city I'm in but would never post my real name, main email account, or other pertinant information on any websites. At the very least, it cuts down on spam, phishing, and...
  7. Re: Ethanol-Induced Effects on Sting Extension Response and Punishment Learning

We have a local distillery that makes a darn good honey liqueur by mixing honey, ethanol, and a bunch of spices. It definitely has an effect on socially relevant behaviours.

I've had two top bar hives in the suburbs for two years now. One of the reasons I picked top bar hives was that they don't look like beehives and so they don't stand out. I only asked the neighbors...

I have a friend who lost his glasses outside one day. Looked everywhere and never found them. Later that fall, after the leaves fell off the trees he saw something glinting next to a squirrel nest...

    Re: olive oil

I put tung oil on the outside of my hives before I got the bees. I'm wondering if it's ok to put a second coat on later this summer? Would the smell bother the bees?

    Re: is this normal

Mine do that every day about 4pm. They come out and fly around for about 15 minutes. Get a little exercise, some fresh air, use the bathroom, and then it's right back to work. Sounds like my job.

Re: bees flying into a light??

I had several bees flying into my kitchen windown early this morning when it was still pitch dark outside. Evidently they were attracted to the kitchen light. I always rise early but have never...

I see many of you have epi-pens and I know they're nice to have but they're expensive and they have expiration dates. Do you toss them out when they expire and get new ones? My doctor wouldn't...

Mine are usually on their flight between 4 and 5 in the afternoon. Two hives next to each other but they don't do it at the same time.

Re: Flashlight use in TBH observation window?

I use a LED light to check my hives almost every night. I can walk right up to the hive and hold it close to the bees bearding around the entrance and they just ignore it.

I'd take the entrance reducer back off. If it's too warm in the hive some of the bees will just hang out on the outside.
  22. Re: Photographs from 2nd Inspection, May 17th, Day 24

Are your entrance holes on different ends of your hives? I'm looking at the entrances on the two pics of the bars of comb.
