    Re: BTU's of honey

I think there is some (understandable) confusion with the term "calorie." It is used for two actual very different quantities, the "small calorie" being the amount of energy needed to raise 1g water...

    Re: BTU's of honey

Back in the 80's, I worked for an Architect that was grandfathered in. I looked into it sometime later in NY and was told they had stopped the practice.

Then there are those who do work in engineering but without benefit of a degree or license. An associates degree or some course work in a technical program doesn't really entitle one to call oneself...
  4. Re: Frame top bars popping off, seeking opinions from the group

I popped top bars in some hives when doing the fall check/prep this year. The frames are all older ones (I date them with a marker when first put into use) and all were in deep boxes. I think these...
  5. Re: California NUC''s, queens and packages vs SE US, is ther a difference?

Oliverez supplied the packages I got from Mann Lake in Pennsylvania this year. Each package produced one split and about 50# honey ea.

Re: Late season Queen Marking attempt

I'll usually paint an unmarked queen if I intend to keep her. But as others said, at this time of year I probably would wait until next spring but give her this year's color.

Re: Late season Queen Marking attempt

Never marked a queen because I was fascinated, only as a handy tool to spot them easier with my less than 20-20 eyesight, and more importantly, to know if the queen I find in a hive is the queen I...

Not sure what kind of evidence you are looking for. If you were to ask for evidence in my neighborhood, I might show you a picture but now that I have some areas staked out for spring trapping, I...

    Re: feral hives

This could work if only you were sure bees working both plates were from the same hive.

J Bee has it. Look up "bee lining."

You could take a look at the list of member here that have added their names to the swarm removal/cut-out feature of this forum. There are listings in every state in the US except Alaska, although...

    Re: Sappin'

I kind of remember hearing you mention at a conference that you gave up cutting wood & hauling sap and endless hours evaporating off most of the water to get a sweet concentrated liquid when you...
  12. Re: All available honeybees report to hyw 41 for cleanup

While I can understand the reluctance of people to wander into the feeding frenzy to reach their cars, I'm curious about the "people that've been trapped in vehicles."

    Were they so overcome with...

  18. Re: Have you ever proselytized for beekeeping?

Went into a local Ace Hardware last week to get wood bleach. When I asked the clerk if they had it, she said she had been selling a lot of it all of a sudden. I asked if beekeepers had been buying...

Re: Questions on Bee packages - State PA

They opened around the time I moved here, but I ordered while I was still in Maine. Still, I was surprised how late in the season they were accepting orders.

I bought packages from Mann Lake in Wilkes Barre this year. They were accepting orders into April, much later than I've seen elsewhere in the past. I wouldn't count on it though as every year's...
