    Another vote for a bee brush and goatskin gloves.... I now use a turkey feather for those times when I need anything at all and the gloves just sit in the box.....

    I have slotted racks on all of my hives..... It basically gives the bees some clustering space and my understanding is that it also improves ventilation.... Also gives the brood a bit more...

    I have 5 hives and used 2 shallow bird baths with sponges and stones..... Filled them daily and never let them go dry..... They were heavily used but much of the business still went to my neighbors...

    Goals for this year:

    Raise my own Queens
    Set up and overwinter nucs
    Improve water sources to keep my bees out of my neighbors pools
    Continue to learn from and support my bees

    I prefer the OAV as it is effective and my understanding is that it is less risk to the colony..... Breathing is no problem as I always stand upwind... Only downside is that you have to do multiple...

    There is a member of our bee club that always seals the inside of new woodenware with a tincture of propolis in alcohol.... I have not tried it but she claims good results....
