    Re: Can i pick a mite off a bee?

    One mite does not turn into 100 mites. There are more effective ways to deal with mites.

    Re: NYS Apiary Inspector 1

    Then no one will get the job, since no one with more than 50 hives is employable as an Apiary Inspector and according to the Job Description anyone with "50 hives or less" is restricted from doing...

    Re: NYS Apiary Inspector 1

    Could be. But when I left Apiary Inspection Employment, and part of the reason I did, owning any more than a small handful was forbidden. I don't know why they don't just spell it out plainly.

    Re: NYS Apiary Inspector 1

    I think you have that backwards, Mike. The restriction excludes commercial beekeepers and even hobby beekeepers with enough hives that they would sell honey at all or do pollination service during...

    Re: How in the world do some hives get so high?

    Just because they are tall doesn't mean they are full. But, bees won't fill supers when they are still in storage.

    Re: "Bees don't read ..."

    I have found completed crossword puzzles on newspapers used for sugar feeding. 'splain that one to me.
  8. Re: I'm starting to think that black plastic frames and queen excluders are from sata

    What's the point of having a bottom exit and a top exit? Are you going to be out there making sure that the worker bees know they aren't supposed to use the lower exit? I don't see the need or real...

    "Bees don't read ..."

    Maybe you've heard the saying that "Bees don't read the same books that you and I do."? First time I heard that was from Dr. Jim Tew back in school in Ohio in 1985. Well, I'm thinking about buying...
  12. Re: ML 1 Gallon Frame Feeder- Fit in a 10 Frame Deep

    If your box is a little tight to begin with it's really tough getting 9 frames in a box with the feeder in it too. I find I have to scrape the inside of the long sides of the box to get the propolis...

    Re: Queen Cells? Just how fragile are they?

    :thumbsup:

    I saw a guy on Facebook who stood his queen cells in a container of uncooked oatmeal. I don't know if he keeps the container in the incubator or not, but were I using that technique...

    Re: Chilled brood or foulbrood?

    They may have dried out and not gotten chilled. Did you move these combs from where they were to outside the area where the colony was in the hive? If there weren't enough bees to keep all of the...
  15. Re: I'm starting to think that black plastic frames and queen excluders are from sata

    Tell that to friends of mine who run queen excluders above a deep and medium brood nest with 6 to 10 mediums for honey above the excluder. Lots of guys do that.
  16. Re: I'm starting to think that black plastic frames and queen excluders are from sata

    I shook the bees from two AFB infected hives onto 5 wax coated plastic frames last week and then the blackberry bloomed and I now have 5 frames of drawn foundation.

    If the OPer would check the...

    I'm sorry. I don't see being blunt and straight forward as grumpy, but I guess it must be since two of you say so. My apologies.

    Additional information, restrictions.

    "If you own 50 hives or less while employed by the Department, you shall not:

    1. Sell the honey produced by such bees;
    2. Offer pollination services;

    Oh, come on Jim. You don't really think that someone should know how to use a tool before they use it, do you?

    No more than usual. You? :) Just the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the OP.
