I am nowhere near good enough to even try to replicate what they do in Mexico. I do good just to take care of my own. Removals are about as much as I get into AHB. Selling bees really doesn't not...
You guys up north (NM) have a lot more to lose - I should have been a bit more specific in my wording. I cannot speak for the Northern half of the state above the hybrid zone. We are pretty much...
Sounds like lots of drones flying and hovering around. it can look and sound like an attack but it is not.
I run across them very often during removals, and tend to have several hives of them awaiting queens at any given time. I keep them in a remote location in the desert.
A little explanation about...
People worry too much about AHB. They are just runny wild bees in our temperate climate. They aren't monsters. The farther North they go, the more Euro alleles are expressed in the genetics. It is...
I just lost a split due to cold. I split them off last week, then we were hit with several 50 degree days/30 degree nights. If they are raising a queen it can be an issue too. They will cluster near...
I have an agreement with a small local company - he does give me a lot of referrals. He is an entomologist too, and does not like seeing honeybees killed. The big companies - zilch.
I have a few red hives, a few sky blue, a few avacado gree, a few whatever... I cover them with corrugated tin sun-shades, so the color does have much effect. No black hives though.
I personally think the pest control industry works against us, and perpetuates the fear of AHB for their own profit. It makes me ill. Lots of un-needed bee killing going on.
I double charge for sprayed bees.
I too, use an insulated top box with cedar chip filler. Sort of like a medium super with a burlap top and bottom but filled with cedar chips.
I am almost Russian. I use cut up chicken feed bags as inner covers on my long langs. I used to use burlap, but the girls waxed them all up real bad.
The bags I use are the woven plastic coated...
They will buy them out too in the end.
Reminds me of a cartoon I once saw... "News Flash! Scientists have determined the exact date the Apocalypse will take place. Business world decides that's...
I went to do a big trap-out for the local Wal-Mart once and quoted them $400 dollars. They would not pay either. I guess they figured someone would come and get them for free, or an exterminator...
Don't worry about Africanized or not - just requeen them if they are runny, swarmy, or defensive.
That's pretty much what I do with them - just make sure you keep the frames in order.
I use a tablespoon of red apple cider vinegar per gallon. I quit using essential oils because every bee in the yard can smell it and it's like ringing a dinner bell. The vinegar is mostly for runny...
It depends if you give them a queen or let them grow one as to the size. I have done splits as small as two frames before, but there is not enough for them to raise a queen. You have to give them one...
I normally check my hives making queens as follows:
1 week from egg being laid/adding brood frame - check for queen cells. (should be capped or very close).
3 weeks from that point is a good time...
You can do it, but the bees will glue them all into a single chunk and you will have a hard time getting them out again. There won't be any space to pry them apart.
I am not sure about it being a selectable trait, or even if it would be a good thing to select for. How many other traits would we lose in the process? A lot of my bees are of more feral origin, and...
We have all kinds of strange wild bees in New Mexico. No telling what they are.
Those are awesome... I love black bees. I have a pet theory that a lot of what is seen as being AHB in my area is actually remnants of the old Apis Mellferia Iberiensis, or Spanish Black Bee. There...
I have cut-out queeenless hives before. It is not uncommon. Just don't jar the cells.
