    Re: Queen castle

Thanks, all. I made a queenless cell starter and am going to try my hand at grafting tomorrow. Once I get some ripe QCs I'll try out my new queen castle.

    Queen castle

Can you do a walkaway split into a queen castle, or do you have to drop queen cells into the units?

    Re: 8 or 10 frame

The only time I move a box full of frames all at once is when I'm bringing supers from my trailer into my house. Otherwise, it's one frame at a time, so 10 frame deeps make the most sense for me.

    Cleaning plastic foundation

I have several frames of Ritecell wax-coated plastic foundation that I had somehow misplaced and have been sitting in my garage for months. They are pretty dirty. I usually clean frames the...

Re: Clean up mouse damage on warm winter day?

The mouse nest was right in the middle of the cluster. I'm guessing they were dead when the mouse moved in.

I decided to open it up. Turns out it was a deadout anyway.

Clean up mouse damage on warm winter day?

Had a mouse living comfortably in a hive. Got him out a few days ago. Now facing temps in the mid-60s F for the next couple days. Should I take the opportunity to replace the effected frames, or just...

    Re: Lost all 3 hives

Don't feel too bad, took me a while to decide to start treating, too. I also decided OAV was the way to go. Good luck this year, and I hope you do find a deal on packages!
  10. Re: Does a top entrance on langstroth hive promote robbing?

I'll let others chime in on the rest, but I can tell you that my hives are 24" off the ground and it is NOT enough to deter mice.

Re: Is this evidence of a mouse?

Will they not just climb up between the combs?

    Re: Going to 9 Frames?

Ease of inspecting the broodnest is why I tried it, but it backfired.

    Re: Going to 9 Frames?

I decided to try 9 frames in my 10-frame brood boxes for a year, and went back to 10. Nine are too much trouble. Extra space in honey supers isn't nearly as aggravating.

    Re: Oxalic Acid treatment schedule

No syringe, nor gloves. Just the N95-style mask and the vaporizer you hook up to a car battery. http://www.mannlakeltd.com/beekeeping-supplies/product/DC-908.html

Ordered a 3M respirator and cartridges rated for acid gas, as well as some goggles, this morning. Thanks for the advice!

    Re: Oxalic Acid treatment schedule

Thank you guys for the awesome comments! I will surely take them to heart. One question more: the OA kit came with a surgical-type mask (slightly more heavy duty, but basically the same thing). Is...

    Oxalic Acid treatment schedule

For various reasons, I decided to begin treating my hives for mites. I acquired an OA vaporizer kit yesterday. Is there any harm/benefit to doing a treatment right away?

I do not know my mite...

  20. Need help identifying possible disease, please

My dad's colony didn't survive the winter. I brought home the hive components today to see about making a split into it. Two of the frames had these spots. I don't know what I'm looking at or what...
  21. Ever see an entire frame of drone brood next to a frame of worker brood?

Title says it all. Have a nice queen and several frames of brood. One of the frames is all drone, both sides. The others are almost all worker, like you'd normally see. The drone frame is...

Re: New Beekeeper, Lots of problems

I would go ahead and replace those frames. That will help your bees catch up. Right now it sounds like they are behind and losing ground.
  23. Re: Have 2 heavy deeps, should I be feeding still

If you continue to feed, give them more room. They will cluster in the space vacated by emerging brood once the queen stops laying.

Re: Why would workers ball young queen in a nuke?

This occurred in two nucs I started this spring. I put the queens in cages with honey comb plug and within 24 hours the queens were released and no longer being balled.

Re: New Beekeeper, Lots of problems

    Yeeeuuuucckk.

I don't know how much extra equipment you have, but you might be able to just shake the bees out in front of a fresh hive and start over. I'm guessing your frames were already under...
