Re: Bees not taking feed during dearth period.

There can be several different issues causing them to not take syrup. I would check the following (bigger) items in this order:

    1) They have found something that is supplying nectar. Weeds, Aster,...

    Re: Bees and gunfire.

I've been a competitive LR and High Power shooter most of my years. I have hives in the target zone and mid-range with no problem at all.

Having hives at the firing line within 6 ft of the muzzle...
  3. Re: any of you use NO spacer when using the bulk APIGUARD treatment

It works fine without a spacer. Considering the method used to disperse the gel when used in bulk on the sheet, I have never considered using a spacer. Results have been good.

    Best of luck.

    Re: Un-capped immature pupas - What's wrong??

Are you are seeing this in small numbers across some of your brood frames ? If so, it may be what is termed Bald Brood or Balding Brood. You may find some research on the net but most of the studies...

    Re: Moving to Tennessee

Just as a note so you don't think Mike Studer (TN State Apiarist) is ignoring you. He was recently (several weeks back) in a vehicle accident and is recovering slowly.

He is a one man operation...

    Re: Uncapped Pupa

To my understanding, the name associated with this is Bald Brood or Balding Brood if you want to research it a bit more.

The occurrence is being studied at Baton Rouge ARS, plus a few more studies...

Re: What to do with slimed honey

    Heaflaw,

We lost part of one yard last year to SHB and that gave us several hundred frames to experiment with. We found that the best recovery and acceptance came from freezing at least 3 days,...

Poll: Re: Height of healthy hive

Mine are on concrete block topped with railroad ties = 16 inches (approx). We have skunks, raccoon and possum in herds around here.

This height seems to work fairly well with those critters.

Re: Feeding a package on HSC...

It would be better to do it ASAP, in daylight and acceptable weather, rather than wait and get a bunch of burr comb on your inner cover and feeder to clean up.

Re: Feeding a package on HSC...

    franklinminty,

You need to move your "Inner Cover" above the hive top feeder. The feeder should rest on your super, the inner cover on the top of the feeder. That should clear up the problem on...

    Creosote near Bees

    Folks,

Does anyone have an opinion regarding the effects of creosote near your hives ?

I have a large pile of railroad ties that I thought might make several multiple hive stands. My concern is...
