Re: best way to add nuc/queen to bigger hive

I combined a small nuc with a bigger hive by the newspaper method two weeks ago. It was successful. However, I had made the bigger hive queenless about two hours before the combine.

    Re: Winter apiary look see.

Very cool apiary! Question Glock. I see the picture with a top entrance. Do you also provide a bottom? or is the one it?
  4. Re: First Time Questions (4.9 cells and more than one hive)

I live in the pacific northwest and have bees on small cell. I have had better success getting my Mann Lake PF 100's frames drawn correctly if I shave them down to 1.25". Making 11 frames in the...

MP how do you keep your entrances throughout the yr?
  8. Re: Please try to recall anybody!Kind of artificial swarming.

I guess I was thinking that perhaps alternating foundation between drawn frames would give nurse bees something to do. But since it is away from the brood, perhaps introducing the foundation between...
  9. Re: Please try to recall anybody!Kind of artificial swarming.

Have you ever tried alternating foundation and drawn comb in supers?
  10. Re: Please try to recall anybody!Kind of artificial swarming.

Excellent old thread you found squarepeg.

Since I am limited on the amount of drawn comb I have and the swarm issues you described from last year, I wonder how supering with one body of...

Re: Replacing the Bottom Board During Winter

I would say if they are active during the day with 60 degree temps you should be fine putting them on a new bottom board. With temperatures that warm they probably aren't clustered.

Re: How to store dead out honey?

I typically will put the hive body with frames in a plastic garbage bag then put them into the freezer for 48 hrs. I then pull them and just leave them in my pump house where no mice can get to...

Re: switching to small cell . How do i do it?

I second that. I have had much better results getting nicely drawn comb with narrowed frames compared to the few I have left standard width. I'd use the deeps you have for honey supers. Just make...

    Re: Hive ventilation for winter

I'm curious about the screened vents on the sides. Are they sealed off during winter by the foam? Looks like a good idea for an inner cover. Just not sure with the rain we get if they would allow...

Re: Getting Mann Lake to make 4.9 plastic

I had good luck with the pf if they were narrowed to 1.25". If I left them standard width, I had a heck of a time getting straight uniform comb.

    Re: Hive ventilation for winter

So I made the modifications on all my 17 hives today. Reduced the bottom entrance down to one bee width. Put a notch in inner cover down. With 1.5" of foam on top of that. Then the telescoping cover....

Can I make up mating nucs with cells that are uncapped? Or is it better to move them after they are capped?
