    Re: Honey

Goldenrod and Japanese Knotweed give a nice dark honey in the fall.
  2. Re: It's too complicated nowadays. What were the good ole' days like?

When my dad had bees years ago, the year went like this - Unwrap the hives, gallon or two of syrup, supers on, supers off, extract honey, gallon or two of syrup, wrap up the hives. Rinse, repeat with...

Re: Lauri's bricks down to an Art!

Electric oven, probably 180 or so (the lowest setting). I left them in for about 4 hours, just check once in a while. If they are still moist, leave them longer.

Re: Lauri's bricks down to an Art!

You probably added too much liquid. Try cutting it back a bit. Also, I dry the bricks with the oven door open so the moisture can escape.

    Re: I got stung today!

I work from the back of the hives unless there is a reason not to, and only seem to get stung if I squeeze a bee. Got stung last night - forgot how much being stung on the fingertip smarts.

+1 for Mann Lake. They ship to me from Pennsylvania and my orders always come promptly.

    Re: AFB Identification

Just a thought - if you are going to take suspect equipment to show someone, I would wrap it securely in a clear plastic bag. No need to spread disease accidentally.

Re: Think I have mites in my hive.

I would do a sugar roll to check your mite load, then treat if necessary. I've had good luck with MAQS (Mite Away Quick Strips)- just watch the temperature range for treatment. They are a formic acid...

Not as long as it takes to put in the ear tags... Sorry, couldn't help myself. There is a piece on the Weather Channel site today about the thefts from the almonds. There's no excuse for stealing...

    Re: Dearth in Connecticut??

The flow has slowed up here, bee balm and milkweed starting to go by. I'm seeing some early goldenrod, and am waiting for the knotweed to bloom, but that won't be for a while. Extracted 14 frames...
  17. Re: How do some guys go without any kind of protective gear what so ever?

I wear a bee jacket most of the time. A long-time beekeeper friend usually wears a veil, but says "if you ever see me wearing the full bee suit, just keep on driving".

Re: No larvae yet in April in NH?

I just saw larvae and capped brood this past weekend in central CT. It's finally warming up. I'd make sure they have enough food (and maybe a pollen patty), and give them another week to get going.

    Re: The girls made it

I've lost 1 so far (out of 4), and another may be weak, but is wintering low so I can't tell what's going on. Gave them dry sugar and pollen patties yesterday. Syrup as soon as it warms up.
