  1. Re: New Queen laying drome and worker. Insight??

Are your drone cells larger in width than your worker cells? If the drone cells are larger, then your queen is laying drone eggs where she is supposed to lay them as determined by the cell size. If...

Re: 10 for 10 in Michigan

After years of using the same methods, I did make some changes. I think the mild winter has contributed greatly to the survival so far but here is what I did differently:

    I built 6 frame nucs, 4...

    10 for 10 in Michigan

It's sunny and 57 degrees in S.E. Michigan. All 5 hives and 5 nucs are busy flying and making those yellow dots on the snow. This time last year I had 3 dead hives out of 4. I hope my luck continues...

    Re: Buildin Stuff

TurnTex gave solid advice, don't use a table saw without some training. A Dado blade is even more dangerous if used improperly. Seriously consider the woodworking class and keep all of your fingers...

    Re: Is My Queen Laying?

Thanks for all of the replies. I went into the hive yesterday and found a queen but no eggs. The hive is located in a 40 acre field and is by itself. I have no idea if there are other hives around...

    Re: Is My Queen Laying?

I don't think a laying worker is likely with the last of the capped worker brood just finished hatching. I will do an inspection tomorrow and add a frame of eggs & larva if I find no queen. Over the...

    Is My Queen Laying?

I did a split on one of my largest colonies on 6/9 removing the queen and a few frames of bees & larva. A week later I went in and culled all but 2 large capped queen cells. According to my math, the...

Can this be EFB? (w/ pictures)

After a long break from beekeeping, I started several hives last spring. I started a nuc from a frame of brood & some shook bees which grew a queen and survived the Michigan winter (although they...

It was 20 degrees and windy in South East Michigan this morning. I stuck a probe thermometer in the vent hole of one of my double deep Nucs and was more than a little amazed at the 95 degree reading....

    Re: Cleaning Leather Gloves

I use D&L waterless hand cleaner. Put the gloves on and work the hand cleaner in good, then use a damp washcloth to clean off the residue. It won't remove the stains but they will no longer be sticky.

    Re: Who needs Botox?

No brick or weight on top of the lids. There is (was) a large windbreak but it is the tree that blew down. During the winter, I use straps.

  19. Re: Getting new queen, can I put old queen and make a split?

You could be setting yourself up for trouble by attempting to replace your queen this late in the season. There is no guarantee that she will be accepted and if not, the colony will likely face the...
