Re: pollen sub vs sugar water vs sugar block

Watch the pollen sub starting the middle of April until October they are SHB magnets. It is hard to beat 1-1 sugar water for a new hive in the spring as they will be able to collect plenty of pollen.

  6. Re: Rethinking my beekeeping theology - Bottom boards: screened or solid?

I've always used SBB open year around. I don't use chemicals treatments in my hives so the boards being open are not a problem. They are a lot cooler in the summer.

  10. Re: Foul Brood or other problems in hive - with pictures

Do you have a queen? Is there any honey in the hive? The bees will shut down the queen without feed. They will uncap and pull pupas out of the cells and eat them when they have nothing else.

Re: What am I doing Wrong?

The longer the hive is open the more bees will boil out. Make your inspections as quick as possible in and out. If you see eggs and the bees have feed, do what you came to do and close them up. More...

Re: Hive ventilation going into winter

Wet bees will die quick in cold weather, but dry bees with enough feed will live in very cold weather, well below zero. Put a piece of 1" styrofoam between your telescoping cover and your inner cover...

Re: Oops. I spilled some Bee Go in my garage . . .

I've heard that tomato juice is good for skunk spray. I have washed a dog in it and it seemed to help. That Bee Go is good stuff though.

Re: when is it time to pinch a queen

Add a frame of eggs if the bees draw cells they don't have a queen. If they don't draw cells they have a queen. Five days or less and you have an answer either way. If I am doing a hive inspection...
