Re: Fourth day with robbers on 4 hives

Open feeding is not generally a good idea. Honestly, if they're looking for food and you know your hives are doing the robbing, then feed them. Post an update when you can.
  2. Re: What are you selling your honey for in quart and pint glass jars in VA?

I'm in Maryland and sell mine for $10 a pound. A pint of honey is more than that, I believe 1.5lbs...so that would be $15.

Ten dollars per pound is standard pricing at the fairs and festivals...

    Re: Nectar versus sugar syrup

Sugar is a highly processed and refined substance, it is soley sucrose, with an absence of any vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. Honey is specifically made from the nectar of flowers (then...
  5. Re: going to try to remove bees off the supers with my handheld blower

Astrobee, I'm not sure what other information you're looking for beyond my original posting. Sprayed the board, fewer sprays than called for, left on for less time that the Brushy Mountain video...
  6. Re: going to try to remove bees off the supers with my handheld blower

The almond smell was noticeable for about an hour on the woodenware. The honey was fine.
  7. Re: going to try to remove bees off the supers with my handheld blower

In case you missed it, it wasn't BeeGo, it was the Natural Honey Harvester.
  8. Re: going to try to remove bees off the supers with my handheld blower

I'm female by the way :)

I know how to use it, followed the instructions, no bees were sprayed with the repellant. It wasn't BeeGo, it was the "good-smelling" version called Natural Honey...
  9. Re: going to try to remove bees off the supers with my handheld blower

I feel the need to chime in here as I used both a fume board and leaf blower on Saturday.
I used the "good smelling" BeeGo from Brushy Mountain. Before I get into the massacre, I need to explain...

Re: How Do You Spell Honey?

I've only been a beekeeper for a few years and had to share my joy at the honey harvest this past Saturday. Over the past 2 summers when I actually harvested, I would take only 20lbs for various...

Re: Best small scale electric extractor?

Ah, I see. Thank you for the prompt reply Bob. It still looks like a good extractor.

Re: Best small scale electric extractor?

So does the conical bottom on the Maxant feed DIRECTLY into the honey gate? The one our club has is from Dadant and the flat bottom sits about 1/2" below the honey gate so I feel that I lose quite a...

    Re: Pre swarm? Video

It's called "washboarding", don't know what it means but I've seen it too without swarming resulting.

    Re: Robbing Related Questions

I like Mount Airy, I enjoy visiting the downtown area- Laurienzo is yummy.

Open feeding tends to attract wasps and hornets this late in the season and they can cause their own problems. Earlier in...
  15. Re: When to remove reducer and when to add honey super?

I have not personally used upper entrances but I believe those that do tend to use them if they use queen excluders or have lots of supers. The idea is that the returning foragers and house bees that...

    Re: Robbing issue

I would take stores OUT of the robbing hives, GIVE them to the victims. Give empty frames to the robbing hives, feed those hives syrup and have them fill up those empty frames. Don't feed the weak...

    Re: Rosemary Hedge=Rosemary Honey?

FYI, bees can range up to 5 miles to forage, that equals ~50,200 acres. You would need a lot of rosemary.

On the entrance reducer note: I always have the reducers on, so I never think to tell people to use them. According to Seeley "Most nest entrances consisted of a single knothole or crack with a total...

    Re: Robbing Related Questions

Hi Spring Green, I'm in Eldersburg and had robbing issues of my own a few times. I found the solution, for me at least, was to feed the hives DOING the robbing. You can try closing the robbing hives...

  23. Re: Tips for not killing a bunch of bees when putting a hive back together anyone?

I use pillow cases as hive drapes, I bought sizes larger than the standard pillow case size and I cover all boxes that are open. This helps keep the number of the bees in the air significantly down,...
  24. Re: Crush and Strain - Need tips & tricks

I used this technique last year but my frames were foundationless and thus very easy to cut off the surrounding wood. I was able to obtain a food grade plastic bucket with lid from the bakery section...
