  1. Re: Queen Bee on the Ground with a small cluster

Usually after a supercedure I've seen it on occasion, they pull on her wings to prevent her from laying. Sometimes they'll kick out a drone layer the same way.
  2. Re: Moved bees into hive, can't find entrance?

I'm betting the same thing as deknow.

Re: Screen over hole on inner cover

I've been screening them for years. I don't remember offhand the screen size but it's the same they use on package bee cages. Pros- easy access for hive beetles is eliminated Cons- other critters...

    Re: Mating nuc bearding nonstop?

Nuc might be a little over populated.
  7. Re: Asking for help to "read" my frames once again please

If you have enough queen cells you could split. It would give you insurance, a back up queen is always a good thing to have.
  8. Re: Split Question. Queen with queen cell in hive

Probably just a dud queen cell. Did you find eggs or larvae yet?

Re: Spot the queen! ( video)

It's probably a secondary swarm unless they swarmed from a nuc.
  10. Re: Asking for help to "read" my frames once again please

A queen cup is empty and has no larvae in it also it is considered a queen cup if it has a larvae and royal jelly it's a queen cell. Looks like the beginning of a possible supercedure. Next time you...
  11. Re: Asking for help to "read" my frames once again please

Re: Spot the queen! ( video)

She's at the 0:50. She was probably coming back from orientation or mating flights. You'll only see her abdomen. I stand corrected it was a swarm Charlie picked up.

    Nice black queen Charlie!
  14. Re: Found capped queen cells, don't know if my queen is AWOL.

You've got capped queen cells and some that have emerged they've already swarmed once. This means there might be a virgin running around in there and a secondary swarm might happen. Good oppurtunity...

Re: Mating nucs with robber screens

I use 6 5/8 by 8 1/8 screen on 4 frame nucs. The way I build my nucs the 8 1/8 gives them a 3/8 gap between the screen and the top cover. The 3/8 is what I shoot for. Whether nucs or 10 frame deeps I...

    Re: goldenrod?

Goldenrod smells like a pair of dirty wet socks when the bees are putting it up usually in the fall as schmism has stated.

Re: Mating nucs with robber screens

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder what type of robber screen Brandy is using? I believe Dave LaFerney and myself are using the same if not similar screens.

When you looked for mites did you do an alcohol wash? If you were just looking to see if there were mites you more than likely won't see them they're very small and very difficult to see. SHB stands...

They can be attracted to the condensation in an ac unit also a swarm could move in when the unit is off and when it kicks back on you'll hear a ting ting ting ( bees bouncing off the fan blade). I've...

    Re: Robbers

The Vicks trick I've learn from Michael Bush and it works great, wished I had learned it a long time ago. The Vicks buys time to build a robber screen or to get one to put on. Thanks again Mr. Bush!

    Re: Robbers

If you do one you'll be wise to do them all. That's my policy and eliminates having to worry about the ones without. Robber screens on mating nucs will have absolutely no affect on queen mating...

Put the robber screens back on robbing season is starting. If you can wait until dusk when all the bees are in the hive it will be easier for them to orient. Rub some Vicks around the entrance will...

I wouldn't. Some areas are already in a dearth and in my area it's starting to taper off. I'm just a little south of you.
