Re: Funniest bee question ever asked

At least most of the dumb questions I have fielded have been with 100% naive good intention. A lot of hibernation questions. A lot of misunderstanding of where they collect nectar from. Etc. etc.

    Re: Feeding without stimulating?

I'm not sure that answers my question. Will that slow trickle not stimulate them?

    Feeding without stimulating?

Is that possible in spring? Can you feed a heavy syrup and put on weight without stimulating?

Re: Bee pulling cracked corn from bird feeder

A box with sugar water will only feed those bees. It will not entice a swarm. Just an fyi.

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

My biggest concern with that setup would be where the bees are orienting to. When I moved my hives I had a few bees fly back to the shed. If you give the bees free accessess outside I'd worry about...

Re: Why I have never lost an over-wintered hive

I would argue that your winters are mild. I lived in the western suburbs of Chicago, more specifically the Naperville area for over two years while in school. The difference between minnesota and...

Re: Beekeeping - a Guy or Gal thing

Most of my experience has been with other guys but a few ladies. I believe it was said that more hobby keepers are female. I have only run across male commercial keepers.

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Ya I took the opportunity early this am when the sun gave me just enough light to bring them out. It worked out well because there were only a couple of bees that went airborne. So far my three hives...

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Ok so next question. I noticed a few bees outside my shed today. I think they found a crack at the bottom of the door. So I opened the door figuring there is only three hives in there. They can...

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

I'm right there with you. Unless I am missing something I'd rather put them out earlier than later. Just because I shield them from winter doesn't mean that they can't handle one cold snap does it?

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

That is one thing I don't quite understand about indoor wintering. Why must we still keep them indoors when it warms up? Why can't we just take them outside?

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Not only that but the the more hives I build up to the more efficient this will be. The more hives I put in this shed the more heat that will be generated by each hive. Not only that but also...

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

While people squabble I am just giddy at the fact that my bees are so healthy. I believe that if things continue I will be in for a good year!

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Ace bird, I would argue that I hate having to travel multiple hours to pick up packages. In fact I am straight up sick of buying packages. If I can winter my own hives I can rear queens and truly...
  19. Re: FYI: Had a Neighbor Visit the Bee Yard Last Night

That is essentially how I understand it, but I'd bet that plenty of northern parts of the state could handle some.

Re: Bees on sugar candy not honey

Did you inspect the combs? When hives have done this it is because they straight up ran out of honey and only had the sugar to eat.
  21. Re: FYI: Had a Neighbor Visit the Bee Yard Last Night

Plenty of reports here in mn, but I'm not certain we have a confirmed breeding population.

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

My bees may or may not fly far in the 40s. It all depends on what the rest of the weather is doing. No wind and bright sun will encourage them to come out and play, especially if the temp is in the...

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

As I have said I have done all of the things advised by other northern beeks. My strong hives starved after consuming every drop of honey in the hive and the rest froze or starved with honey on the...
