It's an insulating paint. 42 dollars a quart recommend 5 coats so pretty expensive! I don't think temperature is a big issue for bees compared to all of the other challenges.

Where did you put the inner cover? When I use an escape the telescoping cover is put directly on the top super and the escape between the super and the rest of the hive, leave everything else off
If you are not looking to harvest honey just throw a deep on and feed. Worst that can happen is they don't draw it all out.
Got 10 queens this spring all are doing just fine. Johnny called before shipping which is that extra effort that proves he cares about his queens. I know where to go when I need a queen.
