    Re: African hive inspection

OK. What threw me was your comment "Sure looks like it." when potgieter said:

I haven't a clue how those two photos show that the bees are stinging.

    Re: African hive inspection

Just to be clear, only the two photos in the first post are potgieter's bees, not the video.

I don't recall coming away from working the Lusby's bees having stingers all over my clothing. They...

No, few are on the people. Most are in the air. I've experienced it Peter. Nothing like the photos in the first post.

Re: Propolis on purpose: Building boxes ???

    Brian, you said:

as if this gives credibility to how you're using screws on your boxes. Deck boards are attached to joists in the side (long) grain, not the end grain like you are doing. Now...

    Re: African hive inspection

Well, I've worked the Lusby's hives and never were they like this. Yes, they would aggressively bump your veil, but not actually land on it and cover it. Let's not exaggerate for sensation.

I agree and yes, he's resourceful. I just wish he would not use exaggerated statement to prove his points. No need for that.

Re: Propolis on purpose: Building boxes ???

If only you were constructing your boxes as we do with decks, there might be some truth to your statement. However, you're screwing into end grain, something unheard of in deck building.

Re: Propolis on purpose: Building boxes ???

That would be a splined miter, but I've never seen one used in bee boxes. Ace, make some up and let us know how they hold up. The tradeoff is you end up gluing a lot of end grain together, which...

Awww shucks, you got it hard, Bernhardt!
  14. Re: Have not even started and already discouraged...

Personally, I think the right path to take depends on the individual. I did treatment beekeeping first and then went TF. If I had it to do over, I probably would have started TF. I see wisdom in both...
  15. Re: Have not even started and already discouraged...

Easy to do. But if you want to enter beekeeping, you have to have a certain optimism as you are going to face a lot of frustrating situations, regardless of which approach you take. Always best to...
  16. Re: Have not even started and already discouraged...

That's a big problem. I hate package bees. I put myself on the swarm list and get bees from swarms and cutouts. But then I already have years of experience in beekeeping. I could probably get you...
  17. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

When I was in Door County a few weeks ago I always check out what local honey is selling for. $10 a pound? How about $18 for 11.6 ounces?

    Re: Small Cell Benefits

We can't base this off of the study Peter mentioned above as it had nothing to do with apis mellifera.

Sorry, yes, the V10. I don't know where my brain was. That's a great engine.
  22. Re: Q: Why not use historic photos as evidence in the cell size debate

Not unless you have closeup photos and they are high enough resolution. They also have to be shot straight on. Any bit of angle will skew the cells.

    Re: Spider ID?

As a kid, I use to catch these garden spiders all the time. Had fun walking the fields, catching grasshoppers, flicking them onto their webs and watching them attack it. Any snow there yet, Jim?

Does it have their newer 8 in it or the V12? I've been very happy with the V12 over the last 10 years.
