  1. Re: Trapping pollen w/ Sundance II pollen trap and not affect honey production?

Hi Clyde thanks for all your input on the pollen stuff. So you are saying you lose about a shallow super's worth of honey a season?

In my area, pollen is pretty pricey as we have a big health food...
  2. Re: Trapping pollen w/ Sundance II pollen trap and not affect honey production?

Ok, so I am confused by the economics of all this. If I lose about a medium super's worth of honey b/c of having a pollen trap on, that's roughly $360 at $10 a lb for local honey. So how much...
  3. Re: Trapping pollen w/ Sundance II pollen trap and not affect honey production?

Ok, so how much volume? :lookout:

I'm just trying to get an idea of whether it's worth is or not to invest in the trap(around 80 bucks, including shipping)
  4. Re: Trapping pollen w/ Sundance II pollen trap and not affect honey production?

Thanks Clyde. About how many pounds per week do you get?
  5. Trapping pollen w/ Sundance II pollen trap and not affect honey production?

Is this possible w/ a strong hive or will I see less honey production? About how many lbs of pollen per week should I expect?

Where would I find info on pollen flows? I understand they may or...
  6. Re: W/ top entrances does empty super go on the very top?

Interesting. I was told that the top was best b/c the bees would be right there when they came in from gathering nectar. But what you say makes sense as most of the bees are down low.
  7. Confused about fall flow and when/how much of my filled supers to harvest

    http://i64.tinypic.com/2lavnf5.jpg

I have 4 hives all going with varied success. My strongest hive has 3 medium supers about 80-90% full. They are from a package, but we gave them some drawn comb...
  8. Re: W/ top entrances does empty super go on the very top?

Not a primarily honey crop beekeeper? So you are selling bees? Or the comb/wax?
  9. Re: W/ top entrances does empty super go on the very top?

So in the case of multiple supers, the supers with honey are closer to the brood nest with the empty supers at the top of the stack?
  10. W/ top entrances does empty super go on the very top?

I am using top entrances and so far am placing the empty supers on the very top. Not directly on top of the brood nest(if I have multiple supers). Is this correct? I guess the thinking is that the...

  13. How many of you have bears causing problems?

I've always wondered this... How many bears and how often do they raid your yards?
  14. How to not spill out nectar when moving hives at night w/ a handtruck

I have to move my 4 hives tonight to a new location as I just changed residences. I have a friend who's a former college offensive lineman helping me so we should be good on the manpower side of...
  15. Re: How to do a Taranov split w/ top hive entrance

Well fellas, sorry to say that my hive split was a a big fat failure. Turns out when we set up the board and everything, the new hive was under the board and was accidentally touching the pallet...
  16. Re: How to do a Taranov split w/ top hive entrance

What are the chances she's still in there if I saw eggs yesterday?
  17. Re: How to do a Taranov split w/ top hive entrance

Thanks for all the help, so my plan is to leave the some of the swarm cells in the old hive location. I will also leave brood and eggs with them.

According to this video, you don't need to find...
  18. Re: How to do a Taranov split w/ top hive entrance

Good point. I brushed and smoke them off so I could take the photo:applause:

  19. Re: How to do a Taranov split w/ top hive entrance

I did watch a few videos, but none seemed to be with a hive top entrance. But in the videos I saw the board goes up to the old hive right? Then you take the cluster and put it into a new hive far...
  20. How to do a Taranov split w/ top hive entrance

Yesterday afternoon I found these swarm cells on one of my hives :digging: I think the queen is still in there b/c I found new eggs, you know like the grain of rice standing straight up in the...
  21. Re: Shotgun brood pattern? Is this a poor laying queen or new bees have just hatched?

The hive still has a queen for all I can tell. I saw new eggs. As far as the pattern for unsealed brood, I'll need to check that this week. It is often really hard for me to see the eggs if on wax...
  22. Re: Shotgun brood pattern? Is this a poor laying queen or new bees have just hatched?

What does pulling capped brood mean?
  23. Shotgun brood pattern? Is this a poor laying queen or new bees have just hatched?

Is this a poor laying queen or new bees have just hatched from these cells?
  24. Controversial question re: honey supers

I have 2 hives that are going well. I removed the feeders about a week ago and I just put on the first medium supers(w/ drawn comb) Monday afternoon. I checked 5 days later and they had filled 6.5 of...
