    Re: Why did they swarm?

Will rainy weather delay a swarm? And what happens if during this delay, if any, and a new queen emerges, will there be the end of the swarm if the older mama is killed?

    Re: Why did they swarm?

I have the plastic NUC boxes that I originally obtained with my NUCS.

So to do this I would catch the current queen, she's marked, and gather a couple of good frames of brood and make a NUC??...

Re: Two questions: for now anyway...

I was thinking the same thing. Put the excluder on now and get them used to moving thru it. Clearly the sugar water would give them the incentive to do so.

I purchased two top hive feeders from Brushy Mountain with the wood floats and plastic screens. So far so good! I'm a bit amazed at how much sugar water they are taking! I guess they'll really start...
  7. Re: How much experience does it take to be an expert?

In the end, the ONLY experts at bee keeping are the bees themselves! Everyone else is just moving from beekeeping 101 through more advanced studies.
  8. Re: How much experience does it take to be an expert?

Well as an airline captain with over 10,000 hours and over 400 oceanic crossings and 109 north pole crossings I can honestly tell you I'm still no expert when it comes to flying commercial widebody...

    Top Hive Feeders

Which one to buy and why?

I installed 2 NUCS on May 8. I've been feeding a few qt jars per week but based on my readings I feel they need more. But honestly, my hives are expanding quickly. I'd...

    Re: concerned about hot bees?

That's a good idea. I also rip wooden paint can stir sticks. But I like the coffeee stick and pop sickle stick idea. No ripping. Already a very good width.

I've used the pellets from Tractor Supply that are basically garlic and onion oil laced pellets. Seems to keep skunks away from my barn. I threw a little at a nest one day and sure enough, momma...

Yes, scrub down with Scope and then Dawn dishwashing liquid. Works well. Unfortnately I know all too well. Got a direct hit from 3 feet away. Not fun!

This is interesting. I found a fistful of bees dead under one of my hives the other day. Have not had a chance to fully inspect and will do so Monday. From all external indications and the activity...

    Re: About ready to rock...!

    Re: Killer Blue Jays?!!

On day 6 of my first hives I found a dead blue jay next to hive #1. there was a mark on the side of my hive where he had hit. I guess he broke his neck when he collided with the side of the hive.
