  1. Re: spraying bees with syrup cause robbing? what are your thoughts

My bees are so robber oriented at this time I would worry about spraying syrup anywhere. I have lost one good hive to robbing despite a robber screen and lost another a couple of weeks ago.

    Re: Overwintering a nuc

I over wintered Nucs here last year. Left them out like the other hives. I was concerned as they are ply not board but they did just fine.

I am still new to this. My feelings when I see a swarm flying off is a combination of inane excitement and frustration:)

Re: Notches and holes... Does it really matter?

Mine are not so deep...just a board so they don't stick the telescoping cover down.
  5. Re: Is this just me or something everyone else knows and I am just figuring it out?

Thank you for all replies. At least it is not just me. I don't try and build hives in December perhaps I have to accept our productive bee season is short...May and June:)
  6. Re: Is this just me or something everyone else knows and I am just figuring it out?

I usually treat varroa load hives again in Aug. I feed protein patties, loose pollen and sugar syrup when raising Queens. As mentioned they don't draw comb this time of year in my hives...with or...
  7. Is this just me or something everyone else knows and I am just figuring it out?

I tried splits for the first time last year. They went great...until mid July when they failed big time.

This year I tried raising Queens and starting splits with them. In May and June all went...

How best to search this forum?

Not so long ago someone posted where to purchase clear 2.5" bee vac tubing to run from the vac to where one is collecting up the bees. I thought I would be able to source that locally but so far no...

Re: Ideas for keeping cool in a full suit?

Wear only the suit:)...and perhaps one of those ice packs but expect they would thaw quickly. A camel pack filled with ice water would allow ingestion of cold water as well as would keep you cool.

Re: Xentari: BTA for treating Wax Moth

    On the wax moth issue.

I saw wax moth on stored empty frames for the first time last week. I put them on the hives.

Will the bees clean it up?

I also have several deeps of capped...

During our dearth period I try to reduce all entrances to the point that a couple of bees will block it.

Re: How many boxes do you winter your bees in ?

If they have enough feed does the number of boxes really matter? Does the number of boxes influence the number of bees one has in the winter? Does one need a lot of bees in winter as long as there is...
  15. Re: Should I try a fourth Week of New Brood for the Laying Worker Hive

With laying workers at this time of year my concern is am I weakening a good hive for the sake of a strong one. It is not about honey as I have pulled all I require and the bees get the rest.

My issue is the 2 tbh. One was great..over wintered and started well.

I started a 2nd one and they rapidly supercede the Queen. The virgin failed to return...or at least I never saw her or eggs....

    Teaser queen

I have a drone laying Queen that has been in a mating nuc for some time. I also have a couple of hives that I am suspicious of having active laying workers.

The drone layer is such a huge,...

    Re: Queenless for too long

Could they be queen cups rather than queen cells with royal jelly and larvae? I ask as once the hive has no very young larvae they do not have the means to make functional queen cells.
