    Re: Oxalic drizzle in winter

It is better to spray/dripple if they are clustered. You can do damage. It is important to stick to the 50ml per hive. It is hard on the bees exoskeletons/carapace. the same bees shouldn't be...

A couple of things I didn't give enough consideration to was the handling of drums of both honey and feed. There is a limit to the number of pails you can efficiently handle and store. How are you...

I would think that you would still be adding heat, but perhaps less heat overall. In my other job we use ultrasonics to weld plastics and they can generate a lot of heat.

    Re: 3 or 4 medium's for brood

2 10 frame mediums would house all the required brood for most colonies. You could add a third for stores to reduce the need to feed depending on your climate and whether or not you feed in the fall.

60cc syringe works well and is less prone to overdosing than a sprayer. Instructions and recipe are here:

Variety is the spice of life. If you are standing behind a table at the market for 4 or 5 hours every week, you might as well have the table full of a variety of different products. Keep to natural...

If your tap water is quite hard, will using distilled or RO/DI water extend the heating element life by preventing/reducing scale?

Re: Ontario restricts use of neonicotinoids

I have mentioned seeing these maps in presentations previously, but this is the first time I have seen them posted online.

Re: Honeybee Genetics and Breeding Bees

Sorry about that. I picked it up at queen rearing course this summer and quite enjoyed it. Unfortunately, i don't think it is available anywhere else.

Re: Ontario restricts use of neonicotinoids

    Also from the PMRA:

"In 2013 and 2014, Health Canada's PMRA received an increase in incident reports of poorly performing hives later in the season.

At this time, it is unclear what factors may...

Re: Ontario restricts use of neonicotinoids

With a 58% loss there were a lot less bees to lose. The unusual spring also contributed. From the PMRA:

You can only use metrics/data that are available. With the PMRA and EPA unwilling to force studies that look at LDL and chronic effects there isn't a lot of research to demonstrate what the effects...

Re: Ontario restricts use of neonicotinoids

Pre-neonics losses averaged above 15%, so it stands to reason that post-neonics losses would average above that as well. Neonics aren't being banned just restricted.

This is a false statement. Clothianidin wasn't registered until 2003 and didn't go into wide usage until well after that. Stick to the facts.

This is the truth. The science isn't in to conclusively prove that neonics are safe or unsafe. The argument is really over the precautionary principle. Do we restrict/ban neonics until the science...

Here is what is being proposed - the overwintering goal is by 2020. 15% is a bit optimistic IMO.

    Re: Quebec Queens

This statement from the above document is most telling. There are no pure races in NA. Find a queen breeder that keeps their bees in similar or worse wintering conditions than yours.
