Re: Did you stick with top bar?

Shannonswyatt, now you've done made me reply ;) (I'm a software engineer as well as a beekeeper.)

I prefer TB hives. If I don't like something, or if I learn something new, I can change things...

    Re: Keeping Combe straight tricks

I started my first TBH from a package. They didn't care for my 1-1/4" top bars. They have triangular cross section guides, and they do like those; but while they built straight combs at first, each...
  3. Re: Wanting to build TBH for next year - Q's on construction material

I built my last two out of 2" thick pine. Mostly because it was straighter and cheaper than the one-by at my local Lowe's. Both have overwintered well, one for 4 winters now (I'm in WV, USDA zone 5).

    Re: TBH Swarmed?

"Does size of the queen matter? She was no larger / longer than a regular worker."

There will of course be individual variations; but in this case you're probably looking at a virgin queen that...

    Re: Drone Comb

I often see almost all drone brood on some combs, like what you are reporting here. I just leave them be. They know what they're doing. I do open space in the brood area if I see two very nice capped...

Poll: Re: POLL: How Long Is Your Top Bar Hive Body?

48" inside, w/ 17" bars, & made with 2x12 lumber. I can carry the hive body with the 2x4 legs attached from the garage to the bee yard (~50 yards) but it's hard. Might have to find a better way; I'm...

Re: TPH size for ferral swarm

Dr. Thomas Seeley, in his book Honeybee Democracy, reports finding that the average feral colony's nest cavity volume is 45 litres (that's about a 60" cylinder with diameter of 8"), and the entrance...
  8. Re: First-time beekeeper with hive dwindling to nothing

    Kit,

I had a very similar experience with my first TBH. I installed a package, then on the 4th or 5th day the bees absconded with the queen. The left-behinds were tending a tiny hive of about 5...

Re: Frame Spacing in Warre (or TBH)

Thanks Michael. I do have a few questions: when I started with my TBH I went with the 1 1/4" bar. After installing the package it became clear that they wanted more room. They built the first comb...

Re: 2nd swarm this season from a new TBH

Both hives get full morning sun until 11 AM and the TBH until noon. They are shaded the entire afternoon. When the trees lose their leaves they get sun all day. So the Langstroth gets even less...

2nd swarm this season from a new TBH

I've got 2 hives in my field, one a Langstroth which is doing great (its 2nd year) and one a TBH which I started this year. I'm the only one in my area with a TBH and don't have that much experience...
  12. Poll: Re: Of those using foundationless, how many draw straight?

On my TBH I use triangular stock that I rip from a one-by on my table saw, glued to the bottom of the bar. I don't rub any wax on it. It works like a charm.

I'm also planning to convert my...
