Re: Did you stick with top bar?

I did the math, 1 1/4 bars cost be 14 cents each, and 1 1/2 bars cost me 18 cents each.

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

I started with TBs, second year now, and am planning on building more. They work for me, if I find a reason to try a lang, I will do that as well. I do get to play with a lang here and there with my...

Re: Tell me all about white clover

I planted my entire lawn in white clover. I think grass is a waste of time and energy. When it is done blooming I mow it, it then blooms a little bit more, and the deer prefer the newer clover for...

Re: Testing a Electric Bear Fence.

From what I know from reading about electric fencing is that you should not test it with a multimeter, or you risk burning out the meter.

Re: Old Top Bar Hives Never Die...

Looks good, I always thought that if I got away from the TBH I would use them for animal feeders, almost the perfect height for deer as well! LOL

Re: DIY Crush and Strain equipment

You do not need a gate valve, but it makes things easier. You could ladle it in with a ladle and a canning funnel as long as you skimmed the junk off the top first, if your filter missed anything.

    Re: Transfering to larger hive

You could just screen in the smaller hive and move it out of the way while you level the bigger hive and get it set up. Then pull the screen and transfer the bees over to the bigger as ruthiesbees...

    Re: No Brood...All Honey

You have basically done a cut down split, without the split. The bees have no brood to take care of so there is a honey storage and comb building party going on. Add a frame of eggs, add a queen or...
  13. Re: Northeastern Treatment Free Beekeeping Conference for 2014

I sent that same question to beeuntoothers.com a while back, still no response from them, and I too was unable to find anything current on the web. One way or the other.

    Re: Checking hives without gloves?

I have not worn gloves since day one. I do not like wearing gloves and really only wear them in the winter, or for some heavy manual labor. I really only wear a veil, and only when I really need to...

Re: Bee sting me under the veil

Just take off the veil and be done with it. Just kidding. I find that the veil sometimes gets to close to my face or neck, and the bees seem to find that spot to try and get me. Check all the holes,...
  16. Re: Bees pouring out between the bars on inspection - cannot close gaps

When you open the hive from the back, I make a gap about 4 bars wide. I slide all of the empty bars back to fill that gap till I get to the first comb. When I pull the first comb I look at it, then...
  17. Re: Has anyone noticed their bee stings hurting more around this time of the year?

I really need to learn to go faster or something. I have 8 hives this year, and have only been stung twice! :lookout:

    Re: Help Identifying this bee?

Thank you everyone, it looks like a leaf cutter bee to me from the pictures and links that you provided. I should have put in a reference size, I agree, sorry about that.

  22. Re: The Fascinating Story of California's Jesse James of Bee Thieves

OK, that makes sense. Sorry to hear about crap like that! It happens outside of beekeeping as well, and there is no understanding of how some people operate/think!
  23. Re: The Fascinating Story of California's Jesse James of Bee Thieves

May I ask what the story is behind that comment?
  24. Re: Is a cluster on a queen cage a good sign or a bad sign?

That is going to cost me a lot of nickels, I have been saying that a lot this year! LOL
  25. Re: Is a cluster on a queen cage a good sign or a bad sign?

My bees are just not reading the right books, or the same ones that I am! :D
