Less small hive beetles this year?

I don't want to jinx myself here, but I have not seen nearly the amount of small hive beetles that I have in the past. Maybe a happy result of an unusually cold winter for this area? Anyone seeing...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Today I set off robbing in my yard by checking some nucs, which were fifty yards away from my production colonies. I wasn't even feeding, just popping tops and looking at frames. It happened so fast...

Re: bad luck or something I did wrong

How far did you move the nucs from the original hive? I have made splits and left them in the same yard, and most of the bees went back to their old home. Could this have happened to you?

    Re: Agressive Girls

Bees are always meaner in the morning. Remember it is the foragers who sting and protect the hive. At eight in the morning, they are all still home.

    Re: Mini Mating Nuc

    [QUOTE=BeeCurious;1281420]Which mini's?

Are you using the Styrofoam mini mating nucs?

That is what I bought also. Ian, do you have any other advice? I know one thing I will have to deal with...

    Re: Mini Mating Nuc

Ian thanks for the post. I bougt a mini mating nuc from Mann Lake, to experiment with. In my sideline operation, I use nucs with two frames to make up mating nucs. Needless to say it cuts in on...

Re: swarm cells in new hive

Once the q c is capped, swarming is pretty much going to happen, if it hasn't already. See if you can find your queen, take her and a couple frames of adhering bees, and put in another box. The bees...

    Re: Bee swarmed know what?

How big is the hive that swarmed? If there are a good number of bees left, and you were so inclined, you can make a split using the queen cells. At the very least you can maybe make some very small...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Today in the apairy, my 15 year old son told me he absolutely hates working bees, but he does enjoy assembling frames, assembling boxes, painting boxes, bottom boards, and tops. So, I guess I'll...

Well, you live and learn, never knew that. Not sure what kind of paint. It's in the truck. It is the one that Mann Lake sells. Thanks for the response.

    Queen marking=balling?

I had a ten frame hive that has been established for about six weeks, strong queen, and lots of bees and brood. I sold the hive today, when I inspected the hive before the buyer arrived, I got the...

    Re: south east walk away

I'm north of you, but I have done walkway splits around the end of July. The nucs did need some feeding to get up to winter weight though.

    Catching a swarm after work

I caught this small swarm downtown the other day after work. One of our police officers called me, he saw the swarm land in the flower pot. I came straight from school and hived it. It was the one...

Re: Grafting from Foundation less Comb

All I have is foundationless frames, sometimes the bees are slow to attach to the bottom of the frame. I turn the frame upside down when I graft, so I can see into the cell better. I usually put...
  18. Re: It's Hard Out Here for a Queen Producer...

Thank you David! My foray into the nuc and queen business the last two years has taught me a lot about human nature. Some of it good, some of it not so good. The society which we live in, tells us...
  19. Re: Any theories on why there is such a discrepancy between mating success

    Tim,

I remember a thread on this a while back. Some folks believe that queens are more likely to come back to a larger mating nuc/hive, than something smaller.

Re: When to inspect a nuc after installation.

Look in there this Saturday, make sure you see some eggs. A good queen will lay hundreds of eggs a ay, so you should see some.

Re: How's the flow going for you?

In April, it was questionable, but boy is she going now! The production hives are really packing it in, and the nucs are getting honey bound. I keep having to rotate new frames in and out of them....
  23. Re: When is the best time to use a Queen Castle

Since you have 15 hives, you have the perfect opportunity to raise your own queens. Then you can requeen, sell queens, make splits, whatever. Take your best hive, and take out the queen, on a frame...
  24. Re: Foundationless from the bottom up............

  25. Why I decided to buy my equipment, instead of build it.

When I first started keeping bees, I built everything expect the frames, and those I bought unassembled. As you all know it saved a ton of money. When I went sideline though, my thinking changed. ...
