<Farming worked well for over a thousand years here in the UK without pesticides of any kind. Britain was the bread basket of the Roman Empire from AD 64 to AD 400 and after that it exported wheat...
You can check at one of these places, that's how I found mine.

Just thinking out loud here (well in type anyway), I would go with a horizontal langstroth as some people suggested. Depending on the level of disability or experience, there is less risk of comb...
If your considering putting honey in an aluminum container I would say don't. Honey is a little acidic and aluminum reacts with acid. there is some evidence indicating that aluminum can cause...
Oops sorry somehow managed to post to wrong thread.
As to the original post in answer to Bob J's question, if GMOs are safe they probably still don't want to spend millions of dollars in litigation defending them. Now I don't agree with a law...
I think I misposted earlier. I checked my receipts, I got 2x 55lb bags from JH Calo of gum rosin (110lb total). I got 300lbs of the 140 melt point parrafin wax from candlewic.com. I bought stuff...
You can, but... there's always a but. You of course need to make sure that the lumber is dry so that you don't get later shrinkage that will change bee space. Also rough cut can be different...
It's like many things a work in progress still, but I certainly don't mind sharing what I can. It's always funny how small the world is. I drive over to Dorr every year to pick up irrigation...
I would worry about getting straight enough comb along a 20 inch frame if you went foundationless. You could put support bars across it in a couple of spots, but I would definately make it out of...
I buy boards so the yield is pretty close and little pieces of scrap end up making splines and the like. I don't end up with much other than bits, strips, and sawdust leaving my shop, which I use...
I haven't had any luck with my traps thus far, I put out 10 or so last year and nada. Not that I'm not trying again though =).
I have half a dozen that were still going last week. I lost a couple late fall to mites and did some combines with swarms I catpured here and there last year. I'm headed to Iowa in June to pick up...
Not sure how accurate it is, but look here. http://www.themelissagarden.com/TMG_Vetaley031608.htm
nm it only has white sweet clover. I thought I saw a similar list somewhere, maybe it's in my...
I have a pretty decent sized shop at my place also (it was set up to work on tractors originally). I build everything myself, but I don't paint, I wax dip.
I've still got some nucs to build and...
I'm from Michigan, not too far from you actually. I do most of my prep work at odd times when I'm not brewing or remodeling. What did you have in mind?
I meant don't paint the inside of the wax tank... mine was cold rolled steel, not stainless so I painted it to prevent rust until it was filled.
Wax and rosin is cheaper. Wax is cheapest at candlewic.com, you want the 140 degree melt temp stuff.

I saw that site in the design phase of the one I built/am building. It gets cold here, but not terribly cold. I wanted a low maintenance hive regardless of construction cost and was trying to avoid...

Ok snapped some quick photos let's see if I can post them quick before I leave.
Very interesting thread. I went in a somewhat different direction with my horizontal. It's one of those projects that snowballed on me. I've got the basic build done, but I have a few parts yet...
I just make mine flat, works fine for me. To each his own.
I do one blank at a time, which is before they are cut to width. I think a 2x4 blank made like 7 endbars or something, it depends how wide your blade is of course. It takes too long to do them...
Sorry at work, don't have any pictures at the momment, but I made a schematic real quick on paint. The end bar blank (usually a 2x4 or 2x6 with a dado groove in the end for me) slides in from the...
