    Re: roughcut lumber

I have been using "one side rough" that I get from Curtis Lumber. It comes in just 1 X 12 stock and is FAR cheaper than even the low grade stock. Been using for the past three years with...

Re: Can you use Polyester in smokers?

If you are using rolled cardboard, check it to make sure that it too, doesn't have a fire retardant in it.
  3. Re: Will the vibrations of the lawn mower disturb the bees?

Mow around the bees in the early morning when it is usually much cooler....but do it as fast as you can. Sneak up on them from behind the hive first.

Re: What Are These Bees Doing ?(pic)

Is/Was there a queen? Could it be a swarm. I received a call last night telling me about one.....very late in the year.

    Re: Reliquifying buckets

I built a small enclosure using 1 inch thick foil backed styrofoam board and duct tape. Put the bucket inside the enclosure on top of a stand (built myself out of wood). Use electric light-bulbs to...

    Too late to re-queen?

I have two hives, started from packages, that have been moderately aggressive from the beginning. Now they are almost out of control. Just lifting the inner cover, even with smoke, results in an...
  10. Re: Robbing bees came today...take a look...what are they? Beautiful colors

You "read somewhere ... you think?" That's good enough for me...that makes honey bees native here.

Re: can anyone identify this plant?

Arcuate veination; red fruit stalks; opposite leaf arrangement;....looks like a dogwood. Could be panicled or red osier dogwood. Check the color of the pith and the color of the matured fruit.

Re: Multiple colonies & escape boards

I just want to be perfectly clear... if you don't mind. Are you stacking supers from different hives on top of each other? Also, are you stacking within your bee-yard or a distance away?

Re: Swarms in Upstate NY, anybody seeing any?

I had just one call who said the swarm was low on a small tree in her front yard. I started getting my stuff together but 15 minutes later she called and said they just flew away. Other than...

    Re: Dying swarm.

My observation hive swarmed last year. I looked all around to see if I could find them but no success. The next day my friend and I were on the front porch sipping gin&tonic when I looked up high...
  16. Re: Is there any use whatsoever for brown comb that doesn't melt?

Are you sure it's wax in the first place? There is a strong possibility that the brown, "unmelted" stuff is the remains of the pupal cases
of the brood. Does it feel like wax or paper?

    Re: encouraging propolis

I do not "rough up" the interior of my supers. However, I build them from rough-cut 1X stock that is smooth on just one side. I can get them only in 12" widths. They are MUCH cheaper than regular...

Re: What's best way to take honey off this late?

  22. Re: is it ok to leave hive top feeder on for winter?

Is your set-up such that they can enter and exit the hive through the top ..... in case the bottom entrance gets covered with snow or a build up of dead bees on the inside?

  25. Re: To Exclude or Not To Exclude - that is a question?

IMO .... there is nothing worse than spinning/extracting honey frames with brood in them. Next season I am thinking about doing things differently.
