Re: Best time of day to harvest?

If the bees need more room as you say, why don't you just put on a super and leave the honey frames alone?

    Re: Storing honey supers

Why didn't you put the supers back on the hives after extraction? There's still a summer and fall season for nectar.

The flow here in north Jersey is slowing down but my supers continue to be filled. Every week I'm pulling off more capped frames. Your hive looks very healthy and you can expect more nectar/honey in...

Re: brood in my super - how to handle

I just ignore brood in the supers. It will evolve into new bees and the cells will then be filled with nectar. That's all; nothing to do, nothing to worry about; no QE's. By the time that you do a...

Re: How to store an empty hive for next year?

I think you might be over-panicking. This is something often seen by new beeks at this site. Are you ABSOLUTELY certain that you have lost your queen? If your hive population is reasonably strong,...

Screened except for cold weather when solid (political signs) are used. The corrugated sign material is free from sign shop rejects- they just want to get rid of it!

An even cheaper sticky board is a piece of 4" wide masking tape that is taped down (inverted) with small strips of masking tape on a bottom board or screen.

    Re: Bees got Mad

What's the purpose of the plywood? Having it there disrupts bee space and invites burr comb.

Re: Wet supers back on hives questions

I put my wet supers right back in the hives in the normal location. Since an extraction three weeks ago, the bees have refilled the wet supers with new honey. My supers stay on until October and the...
  11. Re: It's too complicated nowadays. What were the good ole' days like?

It's not really difficult these days; I've chosen to ignore 90% of the techniques. I use oxalic acid twice a year and feed with fondant in the winter. Nothing else. It's really simple, just like the...

    Re: Honey Supers

I did my spring extraction on June 18 and put the wet supers back on the hives. Yesterday I checked and the supers were nearly full of new uncapped honey- and I thought we were into a dearth!

Re: Bitter Honey cant recognize source

Does this mean that the cells that you extracted had nectar less than 10 days old? Were the frames you extracted capped?
  14. Re: Might have accidentally locked the queen on the other side of the excluder

Just remove the QE and retire it. The brood in the supers will emerge shortly and the girls will fill the empty cells with nectar. No big thing.

Re: Occasional brood mummy at entrance

I think a better description of a "single mummy brood" is needed. Is it just one dead bee? Is it wrapped in a long cloth strip? Is there a statue of the sun god Ra near the hive?

    Re: Simple Effective Hive Venting

In the summer it vents around the entire upper edge of the hive; in the winter the flow vents solely through the inner cover center hole and then out under the top cover.

    Simple Effective Hive Venting

I've been very successful in venting my hives by placing six screws on the underside of the inner cover. The screw heads raise the inner cover all around by about 1/16". In the winter I just flip it...

Re: Wax moths in capped honey frames

Extract the honey for yourself and spray the frames with BT. I've even sprayed BT on frames covered in bees with no problem.

    Re: Cleaning my old comb

I'd leave it in the hive and let the brood hatch. There's still plenty of time for the bees to fill the empty brood comb with more nectar and honey.

Re: Bees in Siding! (Need Removal)

Can't see any reason for them to leave their own hive; that's where their queen resides and they will remain loyal. Placing a drawn box in the general area would be a waste of time.

    Re: A Must Read

Some wacky numbers by today's standards. "The surplus honey obtained by good beekeepers will scarcely exceed 50 lbs per colony". That's nearly what I expect from each super!
