    Re: Cell Punch queen rearing

My method leaves the hive Q- for 24 hours. I remove the queen on comb and place punched cells within an hour. The cells on a super frame are placed in the space vacated by the comb with queen - and...

    Re: Cell Punch queen rearing

I have had the same problems as Mike Gilmore. One cell out of 12 to 18 being drawn out, sometimes none.

I changed my method and washed my hands thoroughly in unscented soap before punching. The...

Re: Fast way to grow one nuc to 40 hives

Clint Eastwood had a question which answers this thread:
    "Are you felling lucky?"

Because to go from a nucleus to 10 hives in a season (not 40) requires luck in weather, luck in forage and luck...
  4. Re: Here's how I do my oxalic acid vapor treatment

I dunk in water between hives to prevent sublimation occurring on a hot pan outside the hive. I use 2g of OA: and none is left after two minutes in my home made sublimator. A 36AH 12V car battery...
  5. Re: Stupid question: how many beekeepers are scared of bees?

I used to be scared of bees and wasps. Overcame it enough to start keeping bees in 2010.

I no longer am afraid of any insects..(incl hornets).

    Re: Nearly full in July?

My view is simple: If your hive is nearly full and they are still bringing in nectar and it is likely to continue for at least 2 weeks (all true here locally), extracting one or two frames and...

    Re: Nearly full in July?

I have run a 3 foot TBH for years without problems. What I do is remove capped honey combs and extract them## (crush and strain ) and return the empty bars to the hive.. I've done this three times...
  8. Re: Looked like bees were swarming, but then they died on side of hive in a few minut

I hived a swarm in a Nuc. They obviously did not like it and invaded another nuc, killing queen and other bees..(May 2014).

    Sounds similar to your case.

Re: Want to work bare handed?

I have always kept barehanded: cover my hands with an extract of oil of cloves.. helps repel bees.. but a determined bee will sting me anyway - usually around the wrists due to body hair entangled...
  12. Re: NY Times OpEd Piece on Colony Collapse Disorder

Any article which starts with " — AROUND the world, honeybee colonies are dying in huge numbers: About one-third of hives collapse each year, a pattern going back a decade" is incorrect.

    Re: Laying worker

I have just had the same problem.

I shook every comb out 20 yards away - every bee onto the ground. Gets rid of many laying workers - not all.

The next day I added a frame of UNCAPPED brood so...

Re: TBH to Langstroth split question

I have just split a TBH into an 8 frame nuc, dummied down to three frames. I expect the three frames will fill the nuc before winter - we are in the middle of the late summer flow.

    If you don't...

Re: Combining into a Lang Hive..How to?

I attached the TBH combs into jumbo frames using cable ties-- I had to chop the bar lengths by 1/2 "to 16.5" to fit.

Took each TBH frame, attached it to a frame stand using wood clamps, chopped...
