  1. Re: Long black pointy fly preying on a honeybee. What insect could that have been?

Intheswamp, sounds like my terrain is similar to yours. I've lifted up a cinder blocks off the rocky ground to find small red scorpions underneath. No snakes in the apiary for me yet either. But...
  2. Re: Long black pointy fly preying on a honeybee. What insect could that have been?

That's exactly what it was. So strange. Nature is amazing.

    Re: Advice for scaling up

Thanks Beeone, I like this idea. I'll have to mull over it some more in my head though.

    Re: Advice for scaling up

I hadn't considered that option. I like it though. That way I'm not splitting my production hives. Everybody always says that splitting a hive cuts it's strength in half. And the common wisdom is...

    Re: Advice for scaling up

Oh my goodness, I've watched that video in it's entirety probably 8 times. I'm to the point where I want to pause each sentence and transcribe the whole lecture. I still need to really comprehend how...

    Advice for scaling up

Everywhere I go locally there are businesses who would love to sell my honey. My problem is that I sell out within a week of harvesting. My harvests are usually less than 100 lbs. I had 4 production...
  7. Long black pointy fly preying on a honeybee. What insect could that have been?

I noticed it sitting on my vinyl siding and thought it was mating. I looked closer and it was grasping a honeybee. I moved in closer to see what the heck the fly was doing and it flew off. The fly...
  8. Re: First day harvesting pollen. Is this massive bearding normal?

Thank you Lloyd! I had not noticed your post till now. Thanks for the offer of assistance.

I didn't lose faith on your trap. I just had to take a time out and do some research (and focus on my...
  9. Re: Honeybees pollinating Tulip Tree blossoms

    Nice footage there!
  10. Re: Cutout up on an extension ladder: Show us your hive box platform! Ideas needed.

I like those ideas. Thanks, Harley Craig! Those ladder jacks look like simpler than setting up scaffolding. Very cool.
  11. Cutout up on an extension ladder: Show us your hive box platform! Ideas needed.

So you're up on an extension ladder or an A-frame ladder cutting out a colony of honeybees and you don't want to climb up and down for each little comb section you cut out. And... you don't have a...
  12. Re: Adding supers in a Dee Lusby or Michael Bush way

You can open up the brood nest right after the main Spring flow. The main thing is to make sure there's enough time and resources for the colony to get everything built out again before Winter.

    Re: Making Foundationless frames

Yeah, nice work Backyarder! Love the big wedge. I've wanted a good excuse to make my own too. I'd get to play with lots of my woodworking tools! But it seems way too time consuming to be worth it....
  14. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

I was forced to get serious about harvesting this year because of the super strong honey producers I've got now. When I decide to master a new area I like to look at everything technique and then see...
  15. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

I'm ready for the Saturday harvest. Finished the last couple projects to aid in the crush 'n strain harvest. I'm only a 4 year beekeeper starting all my colonies from swarms. So I've never had honey...
  16. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

So I came home for lunch to check on the supers. They were cleared! Not 100%. There might have been a couple dozen bees in each super but nowhere near the numbers of bees when I stood them on end...
  17. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

What made you change course and grab the Bee Quick? Did you just get nervous/impatient? Or did robbing set in?
  18. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

Honey Bandit looks very interesting. I didn't know about that product. 30 seconds to clear a whole super is awesome. In your experience does it clear 100% of the bees in a super? Or just the vast...
  19. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

Thanks for sharing your ideas and methods! I'm still listening and considering them.

Update: All 4 supers were still where I left them undisturbed. Bees were still on them. Numbers were down...
  20. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

Just checked the supers again. Bees still on them. Of course they are gravitating towards the top end of the on-end frames.
  21. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

It is forecast to get down to 73 tonight. Bees in Miami, I am not ignoring your wisdom. I may regret leaving these supers stacked on end on the hives. I will admit it if calamity occurs. I'm taking a...
  22. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

I shaked bees off in previous years. It's just so time consuming. Won't scale up like I want. Losing four capped boxes of honey would be a setback for sure though.

I tried a fume board last year...
  23. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

Just went and looked. Intended to move them. But the bees are camping out. Its probably 78F outside. I know 100% there is no brood in these boxes. So they aren't staying because of brood. Sun is down...
  24. Re: Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advi

l wanted passive clearing of supers. No chemicals/essential oils/leaf blowers.

I just got done taking the supers off the ground and setting them on top of their hives. Set on end so all frames...
  25. Abandonment method for clearing supers: Just pulled boxes. I'm worried. Need advice.

    Hello,
In preparation for the Spring harvest I researched and decided I liked the Abandonment method best for clearing honey supers. I just got done going through my hives and pulled 4 boxes off...
