  1. Re: Very weak hive, no brood, introduce a queen?

Would there be a chance of success with just a frame of workers?
  2. Very weak hive, no brood, introduce a queen?

So, i have a queenless hive with no brood and maybe a frame or two of bees. I have stolen their comb and stores except for 4 frames, and given them to other hives. I see no caps or eggs, just a bunch...

    Re: Finally caught swarm

Not sure about that. I suppose the safest thing would be to screen the trap at your house. In a few days they will be "lost" and re-home once you let them out to orient themselves. Once that is done,...

    Re: Finally caught swarm

No, to re-home them put a piece of screen at the entrance for 2 days. I am no expert, but that is what i have seen recommended. But yes, you can move them in to a new box at your house, but i would...

    Re: Finally caught swarm

From what i've read, if you're within 2-3 miles from the trap spot, you need to re-home them. Better to do that than have them leave!

    Re: Skull Hive

That shouldn't make sense to me, but it does.
  7. Re: Growing degree days calculations for silver maple.

I think the orange highlighted lines are considered "significant" food sources for bees.

Here you go. http://honeybeenet.gsfc.nasa.gov/Honeybees/Forage.htm Compliments of NASA.... why? Who knows, it's the gubmint.

Re: So, maybe i was a little over zealous

Yeah, makes sense. I took a deep frame with eggs and larvae and placed it in to the medium frame hive. I left the spot open under it as was suggested. I guess all should be good within a few weeks....

Re: So, maybe i was a little over zealous

I think in a bit i will look for another good frame of eggs from my good hive and move it in with the lost bees. If they have a queen no loss. If they don't, they should make a new one. I just hate...

Re: So, maybe i was a little over zealous

If i can not find another good frame in my deep box, what about my thoughts on recombining. Is it too late for that?

Re: So, maybe i was a little over zealous

The problem with giving them eggs is that i don't have any in medium frames that i could find, just in deeps. Yes Burns, i split two mediums off my best hive. They had queen cells, but no they were...

So, maybe i was a little over zealous

I had two hives over the winter that did very well. So well, that one of the hives was making queen cells like crazy and was packed to the top with bees. I took the brood chamber and stuck it on top...
  16. Re: Newbie with two important questions about location and foundation.

Drawing comb means they make the wax cells, in your case, on the foundation. I think he is saying add a full box of frames and foundation and let them build it out with comb. After that, put...
  17. Re: How Can I Best Staple Bottoms of Walter T. Kelley Frames?

Soak them, it prevents splitting. i then use 3/4 inch staples to either side. Might be overkill, but you can't pull them apart.

    Re: Ventilated Bee Suit Recommendation

I got mine from pest mall and love it. From what i gathered, several companies in the US used the same suit, just branded, from India. I could not find a site from India to order from however.
  19. Re: I need advice on how many brood boxes where i live and any more advice.

We have maples blooming and some yellow flowered plants in cut fields. Mine are bringing in a good bit of pollen. They overwintered with one deep and a medium on one and a deep with two mediums on...
  20. Re: Moving Bees in the Winter?? Any thoughts...

Can't you just partially block their entrance with something and force them to re-orient themselves?

Re: Thought I was ready for winter?

I think he is saying that they have moved in to the top box with the stores, limited brood. Bottom box is mostly abandoned.

    Re: Talking Bees w/ Wannabees

There is a 5 part video series from the University of Florida on Youtube. They cover nosema, mites, foul brood and beetles along with symptoms and treatments. Would make your life easier to show...
  23. Re: TBH interested, ranting, questions, not sure...

Another solution might be long lang hives. Very little lifting and it's easy to get to the bees without disturbing too many at once. I thought about doing TBH, but i like the idea of...

Uhm, i gave it to you. Read my post.
  25. Re: Crikey, could this be a world record SHB kill?

How can a hive have that many beetles and NOT be overrun with larvae? Is this a joke?

Aha! My Googlefu has come through for me....
