Re: Queen looks mated but throwing only drones

I think my curiosity on it is really, if she has never flown and mated, would she even be inclined TO lay?

And there's likely different answers for different queens on that, really.

    My mistake...

Re: Queen looks mated but throwing only drones

My question was just will a non mated queen start to lay at all.

I realize the differences of them though. I have a queen with questionable mating history that IS laying, that was the reason for...

Re: Queen looks mated but throwing only drones

So a queen who lays, must have mated at some point, for sure? This is really important for one of my own hives ...

I had heard a non mated queen would just start laying and be a drone layer.
  4. Re: Is it worth testing to determine if they are Africanized Honey Bees?

They would have to, I think. I personally feel the AHB is adapting, and just moving on ...

Re: Dang the luck ... allergy verified.

I want to do this, frequent stings to really build up the tolerance, but I have to admit I'm scared to now.

I've only had local reactions, but what if in trying to build up an immunity I just...

Re: Dang the luck ... allergy verified.

Just out of curiosity, how many times were you stung before and no severe reaction?

I am baffled at the reports here of people who have had stings before, some of them frequently, and they...

    Re: almost died

But what about the beekeeper that gets stung fairly often as I have seen some here do, and then out of nowhere develop a very serious problem -- even with taking a good amount of stings before?

Re: Will a non mated queen start laying?

Thank you, that really helps :)

Now its just a wait and see ...I'm being really stubborn about giving them any brood from any other colonies since all the others are young too -- and cant really...

Will a non mated queen start laying?

Instead of just wondering, I decided to ask:

Will a non mated ( never flown, OR, unsuccessful flights ) ever start laying?

I ask this because I have a very dicey situation as Ive posted here...
  12. Re: HELP!! I think I lost my hive but maybe I can save them???!!!

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble :(

When it goes well it's the best day on this earth to be alive, and when it's a struggle like this ...not so much. Please keep us posted.
  13. Re: Combining extremely weak colony - with strong colony

    UPDATE:

Well it was a good idea, sadly there was aggression to the weaker queen which I feared might happen--

took them and placed in an observation hive, and really I think this is their...
  14. Re: Combining extremely weak colony - with strong colony

My thinking was it would share foragers as well as many more nurse bees, food, all resources.

Best of all worlds it would eventually become a powerhouse 2 queen hive --- but at least allow the...
  15. Combining extremely weak colony - with strong colony

I have a very weak colony that is queenright, though only a frame of young nurse bees. The queen might be the original, or she might be a superseded mated or virgin -- they had had a queen cell hatch...
  16. Re: Struggling Hive - three and a half weeks old

    UPDATE:

The queen is still alive, there is about a half frame of bees alive.

They barely move, just cover the right half of a frame, I see the queen there, moving in and out -- they don't seem...

Re: AHB/ Possible AHB reports in California?

Actually, what I was asking originally was just what experiences have been for anyone this year, with encountering them in swarms/feral hives/takeovers etc.

    I know they are here.

    But was...

AHB/ Possible AHB reports in California?

Wondering what experiences all of you here in California are having with AHB/possible AHB colonies this year. I've seen a few things like this for Florida and Texas so far.

    Any swarms that turned...
  21. Re: Had to kill a colony... depressing. Can I reuse the comb?

Really sounds AHB to me, that boiling out in droves and attacking far from the hive.

One way to deal with a hopeless and dangerous case like this, get a VERY large trash bag, and slip that over...
