Re: My hive must be too hot

If they have afternoon shade, they'll be fine. I got full sun, they're fine for the most part.

Re: My hive must be too hot

Bees fanning is normal, wait til you see the big beard in summer, don't worry about it.

Re: Think I Quit Feeding Too Soon

You need to watch protein carefully, you don't want to initiate brood rearing then have them run out. If you have full frames of pollen though, that's another issue.

Re: Was this a queen cell?

Oddly enough, I find two overwintered nucs with virgins and the original queen in them yesterday.... one the virgin had just emerged, the other looked like she been out for a bit.

Re: What are these bees doing?

Sorry to beat an old drum, but everyone telling you to go to the smallest entrance because of possible robbing was misleading. I already tossed all my reducers, it's hot and dry already and it's not...
  7. Re: Newbee planning to go foundationless - what frames to get?

I take it one step further and just jam the cleat in and don't even worry about nails, the bees will secure it and the fit is fairly tight anyways, at least for Mann Lake frames. If you really want...

Re: First year plan ADVICE wanted

PM me if you want a realistic opinion on what to do. Don't be afraid to take two steps back though and learn to keep bees first.

Re: Queen present but no brood, what to do?

I'd check for pollen first and foremost. Adding a frame of bees might help if her population is too low.

    Re: Mobile cell incubator kit?

Co-worker is working on something that may fit this need in a very good way. I'll keep everyone updated. It won't be super cheap, but it will have total humidity and temperature control to a tenth...

Re: Did I mess up my split

People have good intentions when describing cell locations and their purpose, but you know the rest of the saying goes... Like the others have said, you have a queencell, be happy, hopefully she...

when you say larva above the excluder, was that on the 25th as well?
  13. Re: NUC Day 7 am I ready to add another brooding chamber?

if you have drawn comb, put another box on.

    Re: Two New Queen Questions

Might've been another queen in there but I'd give it a week, then check for brood, if you can't get a queen by then, I'd combine with the other package then make a split when you can get another...

    Re: Regression of a package

I would say plastic frames are the best for true regression. Natural cell doesn't mean small cell, depends on the bees. That being said, I use small cell wax from Mann Lake, but as Barry says,...

    Re: Total newbie questions

Frames that are wired just need to be wired one way. Frames that aren't wired, well are just that, unwired frames. Just make sure the foundation is nice and straight, you can use mono-filament as...

Re: WooHoo, got our Nuc today!!

You add boxes when the one you have is getting full. I'd figure in three weeks for that 3 frame nuc to get going you might want to start thinking about it. The bees will decide if it's a super or...

    Re: opened hive today

Most likely drone comb, typical of the first few foundatioess you give a hive on foundation. You split when you see drones and have steady temperatures for mating flights
