  1. Re: Eight frame mediums and foundation less frames for bait hives?

What is a better value? A hotel room with no furniture or a hotel room with chairs, beds, cribs, linens, lighting, carpets and food in the fridge? Which would you chose? Bees are no different. They...
  2. Re: Eight frame mediums and foundation less frames for bait hives?

I am in agreement with the vice president. My traps filled with drawn comb catch more than those filled with undrawn Ritecell on the sides and more than my Warres with only a comb or two. The more...

Re: Things I learned from my first cut-out

The cells in combs are slanted down at a specific angle by the bees. This orientation should be maintained.

What gives you a warm fuzzy feeling?

For me, it's seeing one of my best bait hives all set and ready to go one mile from Charlie B's apiary.

That picture is from years ago, caught with LGO.
  6. Re: In theory, how many supers are needed to run 2 hives?

In my location you would need three or four ten frame mediums for the brood chamber and five or more for the honey supers in a good year. If I were you I would have 20 supers on hand. I also like to...

Here is an article about the tax consequences of crowdfunding. Does Australia have income tax?

  9. Re: How do you apply the lemon grass oil or swarm commander on a swarm trap?

I dribble a drop or two on the bottom board and a drop or two on a comb.

Re: Rendering Beeswax from Brood Frames

I have had good success using steam to render brood frames. There are several videos on YouTube on which piles of brood boxes are rendered using steam injected into the pile with a draining bottom...

Re: Swarm commander: Does It Really Work?

Are you sure that is a swarm? Looks thin. A good catch looks like this:

  13. Re: what size swarm trap have you had success with

    >Does that mean that larger would not work better?

I have had several come and fly away because the five frame nuc was too small.

This one left the next morning:

  14. Re: what size swarm trap have you had success with

A small swarm will fit into a large trap but a large swarm will not fit into small trap. See Charlie's photo in the Swarm Commander thread:

Here is another video for Charlie starting with "OK". It is about a swarm today passing up various baited traps and going into a pile of half cleaned frames.

Two more LGO/SCL bait hive comparisons set up today. Two Warre hives in suburbia, and nuc box and hive out in country at a sculpture farm. Hives are set in unused sculpture circle.

Here Charlie, this one is for you. It was filmed by Bee Whisperer Bob in San Jose, who traps numerous baits for me every year. The bees chose the Swarm Commander lure box over the LGO box.
